RAS AL-KHAIMAH, 26th December 2017 (WAM) – Government-owned RAK Gas is currently undertaking an offshore seismic survey, it has been announced. The 70-day survey, being carried out by the survey vessel Polarcus Alima, began earlier this month and is due to be completed in February. RAK Gas holds licences for oil and gas exploration over the whole of Ra’s al-Khaimah’s onshore and offshore areas. The survey is being carried out on a 24-hour a day basis, with the remote sensing devices being streamed up to 3.25 nautical miles astern of the vessel. A special notice to shipping has been issued by the Harbour Master of Ra’s al-Khaimah Ports, warning them to keep clear of the survey vessel and three other ships involved in the survey. Wholly-owned by the Ra’s al-Khaimah Government, RAK Gas is the sole supplier of natural gas for the Emirate. It owns 30 percent of the offshore Saleh field and also obtains natural gas for its Khor al-Khuwair plant from the Bukha and West Bukha fields, offshore Oman’s Musandam peninsula, and from the Umm al-Qaiwain offshore gas field. CAIRO, The UAE is currently participating in the 44th meeting of the implementation and follow-up committee of the Arab League Economic and Social Council, which started today in Cairo at the level of high-profile officials, to discuss efforts of the pan-Arab Greater Arab Free Trade Area, GAFTA, to facilitate trade between Arab countries.

The UAE delegation was headed by Mohammed Saleh Shelwah, Advisor to the Minister of Economy, and included Ahmed Abdullah bin Sulaiman, Representative of the Department of Agreements and Joint Committees at the Ministry.

Ambassador Kamal Hassan Ali, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs at the Arab League, stated that the three-day meeting will discuss several items, most notably a follow-up report on the implementation of GAFTA, in the light of the resolutions issued by the 100th session of the Arab League Economic and Social Council, and those concerning a proposed mechanism to oblige Arab countries to adopt the council’s resolutions.

In his remarks on the sidelines of the meeting, Ambassador Ali spoke about several issues related to the liberalisation of services trade, as well as tackling a disputed settlement mechanism for Arab countries that are members of GAFTA.
