An Intelligent Education Revolution: The UAE Ministry Of Education Partners with Huawei

Indeed, in order to rapidly react to the pandemic – and continue to support the UAE’s overall vision, to develop an innovative education system and a globally competitive knowledge-based society – the MoE turned to an all-wireless network solution from Huawei, to quickly connect people and environments, ensuring the continuity of learning and achieving more streamlined, robust Information and Communications (ICT)-based services. And with the launch of the MoE School Campus and Wi-Fi Innovation Project – which covers over 400 schools – the intelligent education revolution is well underway.

Achieving Seamless Connectivity with a Huawei Solution

The major objective of the MoE School Campus and Wi-Fi Innovation Project was to achieve seamless connectivity in over 400 schools, by upgrading existing Wi-Fi networks to deliver higher speeds and increased reliability. Such an ambitious network lays a firm foundation for the digital transformation of the education system, in turn delivering a higher quality education experience that allows educators to incorporate new technology – such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), and more – into their lessons.

Huawei’s network solution also features software recognition, helping to implement control over the websites students visit and the software tools that they use. Given the large number of schools involved and the inevitably high number of networked devices, simplified deployment was also a key focus, alongside improving Operations and Maintenance (O&M) efficiency and reducing O&M costs.

Huawei’s customized approach to the project involved the coordinated deployment of several solutions, to create a robust and reliable centralized Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system that will be well positioned to meet growing future demand. Indeed, deploying upgraded switches and Access Points (APs), scalability is already built-in: high density Access Controllers (ACs) support up to 20,000 APs and 200,000 students. The initiative represents one of the biggest investment projects in the UAE’s education sector since 2019.

In addition to enhancing connectivity, Huawei’s solution now allows the MoE to manage all 400 schools – and more – from a single platform, supporting a truly experience-centric network. In addition, each school within the network benefits from significantly improved wireless performance, with higher-capacity switching, ultra-low latency, and zero packet loss during roaming. And, with simplified scalability, upgrading to next generation Wi-Fi technology is already supported.

Tsinghua SIGS developed satellite-based carbon emission inversion techniques to investigate the driving forces of global wildfire emission trends

SHENZHEN, China, Oct. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Zheng Bo’s team at the Institute of Environment and Ecology, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), has developed a novel atmospheric inversion system to infer global wildfire carbon emissions from satellite retrievals of carbon monoxide, investigated the spatial and temporal trends and driving forces of global wildfire CO₂ emissions from 2000-2019. Their study suggests that the absence of a rapid, contemporary decline in global wildfire emissions with burned area is the increasing forest wildfire emissions. This study can guide the future development of a global carbon budget monitoring and inversion framework based on satellite remote sensing. Dr. Zheng’s research article, ” Increasing forest fire emissions despite the decline in global burned area,” has been published in Science Advances on 24^th Sep (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abh2646).

Satellites have detected a global decline in fire burned areas over grasslands, coincident with a small increase over forests over the past decades. Bo Zheng and his colleagues developed an atmospheric inversion system to show that global fire emissions have been stable or slightly decreasing despite the substantial decline in global burned area since 2000, caused by emission increase from forest fires offsetting the decreasing emissions from grass and shrubland fires. Forest fires are larger CO₂ sources per unit area burned than grassland fires, with a slow or incomplete follow-up recovery — sometimes no recovery due to degradation and deforestation. With fires expanding over forest areas, the slow recovery of CO₂ uptake over burned forest lands weakens land sink capacity, implying that pressures from global fires on climate have not been relieved despite the decline in global burned area.

UAE, UK agree on new action plan to drive sustainable development, boost economic partnership

DUBAI, The governments of the UAE and the United Kingdom (UK) have agreed on a new action plan to strengthen their economic ties across a wide range of vital and future sectors, including clean energy, research and development, innovation, infrastructure, tourism, food security, new technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), space and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The two sides also agreed on practical steps to reinforce their economic ties and support sustainable development strategies in both countries.

Their discussion took place during the seventh meeting of the UAE-British Joint Economic Committee, held on the sidelines of Expo 2020 Dubai.

At the meeting, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, represented the UAE Government, and Ranil Jayawardena, UK’s Minister for International Trade, represented the UK Government.

The meeting was also attended by Mansour Abdullah Khalfan Belhoul, UAE Ambassador to the UK, via video conferencing, in the presence of Juma Al Keet, Assistant Under-Secretary of Foreign Trade Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, as well as several officials and private sector representatives from both countries.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi highlighted the close strategic ties between the UAE and UK, noting that their economic relations are a key pillar of their growing cooperation.

He referred to the recent visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to the UK, which crowned the efforts aimed at boosting the strategic relations between the two countries.

“There are promising prospects for enhancing our economic cooperation, and we will coordinate with our partners in the UK to expand and diversify opportunities for accessing our markets, eliminate obstacles to trade, and identify new opportunities in strategic sectors, including trade, investment, health and life sciences, energy and renewable energy, environmental preservation, agriculture, food security, financial services, education, scientific research and advanced technology,” he added.

During the meeting, Al Zeyoudi briefed the British delegation about the recent developments in the UAE’s business community, including the ‘Projects of the 50’ and new economic legislation and initiatives launched by the UAE.

Al Zeyoudi called on British investors, entrepreneurs and companies to visit Expo 2020 Dubai and leverage the promising opportunities in the UAE’s economic sector.

Jayawardena underscored the UK’s keenness to bolster its economic ties with the UAE. He noted that the committee provides a key opportunity to expand their economic ties to cover new sectors and deepen the partnership between the two countries, as well as attract investments, create new job opportunities, and facilitate access for British and Emirati companies to both markets.

The two sides also approved practical steps to enhancing access for SMEs to each other’s markets. They drafted a plan to promote cooperation in the fields of healthcare, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, besides discussing ways to enhance cooperation across clean energy, maritime sciences, climate change, sustainable agriculture, among other sectors.
