Emirates, GDRFA sign landmark biometric data to fast-track international visitor processing at Dubai airport

DUBAI, In collaboration with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA), Emirates airline is now offering international travellers the opportunity to speed up their airport experience by consenting to the use of biometric data.

The agreement was signed by Lieutenant General Mohamed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA in Dubai, and Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Chief Operating Officer, in the presence of several senior officials from both sides.

The first agreement of its kind globally, the strategic partnership between GDRFA and Emirates is a cooperative effort to further improve the innovative and digitally focused travel experience of Dubai visitors. The agreement improves passenger traffic procedures inside Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 and ensures a faster and more efficient airport experience for travellers transferring to connecting flights, as well as those who arrive in Dubai as their final destination.

Commenting on how the agreement will develop best-in-class services for travellers, Al-Marri said, “Dubai is one of the world’s most aspirational destinations, and 2022 has already seen more than 8 million tourists arrive to the city. We continue to support our key partners with best-in-class services as we strive for excellence, and innovation in positioning Dubai as the world’s leading business hub and tourism destination.”

Highlighting the importance and value of this agreement, Adel Al Redha said, “Emirates continually invests to improve customer experience and we thank the GDFRA for extending the bridges of cooperation, communication and coordination to add value to Emirates’ services and allow our international passengers to Fly Better.”

By using biometric recognition technologies and the GDRFA pre-populated biometric database to identify travellers at multiple points in the airport, travellers will be able to breeze through Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 Check-In, Lounges, Boarding and Immigration at high-speed as the AI systems recognise their unique facial features and will link to their passport for instant identity verification. A privilege previously only enjoyed by UAE residents and GCC nationals, international passengers will be able to avail of the service in 2023 by providing official consent in a couple of clicks through the Emirates app, at Emirates self check-in kiosks, or in person at Emirates check-in desks.

UAE Cabinet approves penalties for flouting Nafis initiatives, programmes

DUBAI, The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) and the Emirati Competitiveness Council (Nafis) have started implementing the Cabinet Resolution No. 95 of 2022 regarding violations and administrative penalties related to the initiatives and programmes of (Nafis).

The resolution mandates the ministry and the council to apply administrative penalties per specialisation.

The cabinet resolution provides an integrated legal framework that will limit negative practices in efforts to achieve the goals and objectives of the Emiratisation initiatives and policies.

The resolution aims to enhance the Emirati human development system and prepare a productive and effective national human capital that supports the country’s economy, builds a partnership between the public and private sectors, and empowers the private sector to be a major driver in the UAE’s development journey.

The resolution emphasises moving forward with the roadmap set for Emiratisation through two tracks. The first track is to support and empower the Emirati human resources and enhance their competitiveness to join private sector jobs and help the sector achieve its goals by ensuring maximum benefit from Nafis through its incentives. The second is to deal firmly with violations and limit negative practices by applying administrative penalties and fines.

The resolution specified administrative penalties and fines that vary according to the nature of the violation committed by the establishment with regard to Nafis. This includes circumvention to obtain those benefits or circumventing the demand for achieving Emiratisation goals through fake Emiratisation.

According to the resolution, if the establishment undertakes fake Emiratisation related to Nafis’ initiatives and programmes, an administrative fine of no less than AED20,000 and not more than AED100,000 for each Emirati employee will be imposed. On the other hand, a suspension of support and recovery of the disbursed amount will be initiated against the beneficiary.

In addition, an administrative fine of not less than AED20,000 and not more than AED100,000 will be imposed for every Emirati employee, besides suspension of support and recovery of the disbursed amounts if the establishment submits false documents or data to obtain Nafis benefits to evade or circumvent the Emiratisation system.

An administrative fine of AED20,000 will be applied to each Emirati employee, support will be suspended, and the amounts disbursed to the establishment will be recovered if the facility fails to take the necessary measures in accordance with Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. This law concerns the Regulation of Labour Relations and its amendments, its executive regulations and the implementation resolutions, in case the beneficiary does not join work after the work permit is issued, and the establishment obtains support from Nafis, or the beneficiary shows non-commitment to work or stops working, and the establishment does not inform Nafis.

If the establishment does not report any change in the benefit terms without reason acceptable to Nafis, an administrative fine of AED20,000 is applied for each case, with the suspension of support and the refund of the disbursed amounts after the change in benefit terms.

Nafis has the right to recover the amount of support paid to the establishment during the period if it breaches its obligation to appoint the beneficiary after the end of the Nafis-backed training period without an excuse accepted by Nafis.

Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2023 to celebrate 15th anniversary

DUBAI, The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, the biggest celebration of stories in the Arab region and one of the top literary festivals in the world, will be celebrating its 15th anniversary from 1-6 February 2023 with a starry mix of Hollywood celebrity, award-winning authors and experts leading the field on matters shaping the world today.

Bringing together more than 250 of the world’s greatest writers and thinkers in more than 300 events, the programme is bursting with big names, many of whom are returning to Dubai as “old friends”, reflecting this year’s festival theme.

Top author names were revealed in a ceremony at the Mohamed Bin Rashid Library. The line-up includes Brian Cox, Emmy-award winning patriarch of the hit streaming series Succession; master-storytellers Cecelia Ahern, Mohsin Hamid, Alexander McCall Smith and Jeffrey Archer; Indian politician Shashi Tharoor; notable Bahraini poet Qasim Haddad; and Emirati author and poet Maisoon Saker Al Qassimi, 2022 winner of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.

For the first time ever, the Festival has welcomed a guest curator, poet and author Lemn Sissay, who brings his own inimitable flair to selected events.

The eclectic programme is believed to be one of the most diverse line-ups of any literary event in the world, representing almost 50 different nationalities including a strong representation of Filipino writers.

Celebrating 15 years of enthralling storytelling, the Festival will take place at the Intercontinental Festival City, and across the Creek at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library – with the two venues connected by an abra service across the water.

Ahlam Bolooki, Festival Director for the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature said, “We are overjoyed at the amazing line-up we have secured to celebrate our 15th Year, welcoming old friends and new. We are so proud of what has been achieved in that time. We have welcomed almost 1700 writers to Dubai, who have transported us to new worlds and different times and introduced us to characters we might not have ordinarily met. Through discussion, dialogue, and stories, together we have made sense of the world, learnt about ourselves and each other, connected with and appreciated others’ viewpoints. We have ignited a passion for reading and words in the many thousands of children who have been inspired by meeting an author.”
