UAE Gender Balance Council explores ways to boost partnership with World Economic Forum

DUBAI, On the concluding day of the 10th edition of the World Government Summit, the UAE Gender Balance Council (UAE GBC) explored potential areas of future cooperation with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to strengthen their already robust partnership.

This partnership culminated in a cooperation agreement at the annual meetings of the Forum in Davos last January.

Today’s discussions were held during a meeting between Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice President of the UAE GBC, and Saadia Zahidi, Director-General of the WEF, marking the culmination of the Council’s involvement in the activities of WGS 2023.

The UAE GBC mirrors the UAE’s unwavering commitment to gender balance, which highlights the nation’s pioneering role and influential position in this field both regionally and globally. The Council’s inspiring achievements are a testament to the dedicated support, encouragement, and care provided by the wise leadership of the UAE.

The UAE GBC organised several interactive and insightful sessions at WGS 2023 as part of the Gender Balance Forum, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council and wife of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Court.

During the meeting, both parties agreed to continue efforts to improve collaboration in several areas, including jointly organising forums and events to discuss and learn from global best practices and their applicability in countries that continue to encounter challenges in achieving gender balance. This approach will help accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 5, to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Al Marri reiterated the Council’s commitment to collaborate with the WEF in discovering efficient and advanced models that ensure women’s access to equitable opportunities for development across all areas. The ultimate goal is to achieve global objectives for gender balance while sharing the UAE’s pioneering experience in this domain.

Zahidi commended the UAE for attaining an advanced level of gender balance, which reflects the wise leadership’s commitment to leveraging the role of women as a central pillar in achieving development and prosperity. She emphasised that the UAE’s accomplishments, coupled with a legislative framework that promotes gender balance, contributed to the country’s ranking as the top Arab nation in the WEF’s Gender Gap Report 2022.

The UAE also ranked first globally on four sub-indicators of the report, including parliamentary representation of women, literacy rate, the gender ratio at birth, and girls’ enrolment rate in primary education. Given its ongoing efforts to promote gender balance across all sectors, the UAE has considerable potential to make further strides in the rankings.

Zahidi expressed the WEF’s pride in its partnership with the UAE through the UAE GBC, stating, “This partnership will help us in achieving further progress in global gender balance through the Council’s effective contribution to the work of the WEF’s Centre for New Economy and Society. This will help reinforce global initiatives aimed at giving the gender parity agenda a crucial place at the centre of international economic recovery efforts and on equal footing.”

At WGS 2023, leaders and officials from the government and private sectors, as well as representatives of international organisations with expertise in gender policies, participated in discussions about the current status and opportunities for progress in gender balance and women’s participation in government, both locally and globally.

The Gender Balance Forum and the Women in Government Forum, also held under the patronage of Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed, provided a platform for dialogue and collaboration to accelerate progress towards SDG 5.

UAE reaffirms commitment to SDGs in declaration with UNIDO

DUBAI, The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) today signed a joint declaration at the World Government Summit (WGS) to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the objectives of the UAE’s National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Dr. Gerd Müller, Director-General of the UNIDO, signed the agreement.

The declaration aligns with the UAE’s commitment to achieving the SDGs and its net zero target. It is also consistent with MoIAT’s strategic objectives, which aim to advance the national industrial sector’s growth and development by adopting advanced technology solutions, ensuring the competitiveness of local products, and positioning the UAE as a competitive regional and global industrial hub.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber said, “The joint declaration aligns with our leadership’s directives and MoIAT’s drive to promote continuous cooperation with relevant international organisations. It also supports the exchange of expertise and knowledge to help to achieve the objectives of the National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology.”

He added, “This declaration is part of our closer partnership with UNIDO. Last July, a joint taskforce was formed in the UAE, overseen by MoIAT and UNIDO. The taskforce will identify and develop joint activities and projects. Cooperation, joint efforts, and the exchange of expertise and knowledge with UNIDO will enhance the industrial sector’s contribution to the UAE’s efforts to achieve SDGs as well as its journey towards net zero. It will also improve local manufacturers’ competitiveness and their adoption of sustainable practices and advanced technology solutions.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Gerd Müller said, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the UAE for its ongoing cooperation and trust. The two joint declarations that we have signed give a new dynamism to our cooperation. UNIDO has the innovative skills, technical expertise and knowledge. We are pleased to be working with the UAE to be part of the solution for the prosperity of the communities in need.”

The joint declaration covers exchanging expertise, data, knowledge, and experiences, while improving existing cooperation between UNIDO and MoIAT, alongside relevant government agencies and institutions in the UAE. It also bolsters collaboration in capacity building in areas including competitiveness, industrial policies, quality infrastructure, and skills, in line with the Industrial Technology Transformation Index developed by MoIAT.

Areas of cooperation within the declaration include supporting the objectives set out in the annual Industry and Advanced Technology Forum, which is organised by MoIAT and the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) on the sidelines of WGS.

It also seeks to help reinforce the UAE’s R&D ecosystem, as well as the adoption of sustainable practices and clean energy solutions. The declaration will support the implementation of the circular economy and the growth of the green hydrogen sector in the UAE.

The declaration will strengthen cooperation and support the industrial sector’s contribution to the UAE’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and attaining net zero. This aligns with the UAE’s work to host COP28 in November.

The declaration is the latest step in the partnership between the UAE and UNIDO following a bilateral agreement signed in 1988.

In July 2022, MoIAT and UNIDO formed a taskforce to identify and develop joint events, initiatives, and projects.
