Emergency humanitarian aid dispatched from Dubai’s International Humanitarian City to Somalia

DUBAI, The International Humanitarian City (IHC) promptly responded to and supported the World Health Organisation (WHO) with the dispatch and transport of much-needed aid to Mogadishu, Somalia, following a deadly car bombing that claimed the lives of more than 120 people and injured at least 300 others.

A consignment including 38 metric tonnes of trauma kits and surgical equipment – valued at approximately US$130,000 – was airlifted earlier today and will support first responders in the Somalian capital, helping alleviate the suffering of around 55,000 people due to the overwhelming effects of the car bombing.

Giuseppe Saba, CEO of IHC, said, “In line with the commitment and mandate of the IHC, the City responded to the request of the WHO to assist with the urgent dispatch of aid to Somalia. The IHC facilitated and funded the logistics and transportation cost, accounting for 60 percent of the total operation’s cost through its Global Humanitarian Impact Fund (GHIF). The GHIF mobilises resources from the private and public sectors to swiftly respond to emerging humanitarian crises, affirming the role the IHC plays, leading from the front and enhancing global humanitarian preparedness.’’

Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said, “As part of a broad United Nations response to the blasts in Mogadishu, the World Health Organisation, in partnership with International Humanitarian City, is now delivering another 38 metric tonnes of trauma and emergency surgery medicines, infusions, and supplies to reinforce recovery efforts. On Saturday, WHO’s Logistics Hub in Dubai coordinated the first charter flight carrying supplies to treat approximately 2,500 patients for trauma and burn-related injuries. These additional supplies are critically needed to ensure that essential medicines and infusions are available in Mogadishu to care for blast victims and prevent further loss of life. Thanks to the support of the Dubai Government, the International Humanitarian City, and the Government of the UAE, WHO’s logistics hub in Dubai can rapidly respond to acute health emergencies around the world to deliver humanitarian aid to those in greatest need, in line with our collective Regional vision of ‘Health for all, by all’.”

Dubai Police seize 436kg of drugs

DUBAI, The brave, highly skilled officers of Dubai Police have recently dismantled an international drug trafficking network and revealed the culprits’ secret methods in smuggling the harmful toxins after only seven hours of receiving the report.

The General Department of Anti-narcotics at Dubai Police received a tip-off about a drug-trafficking gang attempting to smuggle drugs in 280 packaging bags (5.6 tonnes) filled with a mixture of natural and plastic broad beans stuffed with narcotics.

As the investigation team was on the suspects’ tail, at the zero hour, they raided their den, arrested the six culprits red-handed, and extracted 436kg of toxins from the legumes.

The Dubai Police General Command confirmed that the Force spares no effort to all attempts to smuggle and traffic drugs. All security measures and procedures will be taken to foil and disrupt their criminal schemes.

The General Department of Anti-narcotics has received a reliable tip-off, reporting a drug-smuggling attempt initiated by an international syndicate, whose few members reside within the emirate while others operate without. The report indicated that tons of illegal substances were hidden in legumes shipment and stored in one of the warehouses.

Upon receiving the information, the Dubai Police formed an investigation team who kept the suspects under close surveillance and located the warehouse in question, where a large amount of board beans had been hidden.

At the zero-hour, the raid took down the suspects and uncovered the narcotics stuffed in plastic legumes, which were ready to be shipped to a nearby country.

Officials from Dubai Police stressed that Operation Legumes is one of the exceptional operations that the Force has carried out, especially as the warehouse inspection required high-skilled security and the deployment of a K9 unit to discover narcotics stuffed in plastic food.

“We will seize every opportunity to preserve the local, regional and international security and safety in coordination and cooperation with international counterparts,” “We will protect the communities from drug trafficking and disrupt all the criminals’ attempts,” “We believe that the security-exchange of information and expertise in the drug-trafficking cases with other polices agencies have contributed significantly in increasing the seizers of drugs in recent years,” Dubai Police officials said.

MoHRE calls on private sector to meet Emiratisation rate before end of 2022

DUBAI, The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) today called on companies with more than 50 employees to expedite achieving Emiratisation rate of two percent for skilled jobs, in line with the concerned UAE Cabinet Resolution, before the end of 2022.

Non-compliant companies will face financial penalities, which will be collected starting from January 2023.

MoHRE encouraged companies to benefit from the incentives provided for recruiting UAE nationals through the NAFIS platform, saying it will boost their efforts in reaching the required rate before the deadline.

Saif Al Suwaidi, Under-Secretary for Emiratisation at MoHRE, said, “We are keen to support and empower private sector companies to achieve the Emiratisation targets before the end of this year, we’re cooperating closely with the private sector, stemming from our belief in its role as a key partner in developing and shaping the future.”

“Given the private sector’s role in the UAE’s job market, achieving the goals and directions of the UAE require unified efforts of government entities and the private sector to improve the business environment and create an investment climate that encourages companies, investors, entrepreneurs, and talents from all over the world to work in the UAE, especially in the strategic priority sectors,” he added.

“Compliance with the laws regulating the job market is in the interest of private sector companies and their employees. We aim to develop the capabilities of the private sector and enable it to keep pace with changes in global business models and attract UAE national talents to work in skilled jobs, through the Nafis programme, which is a cornerstone of these efforts,” he further said.

MoHRE offers private sector companies that reach the Emiratisation target a package of incentives, including the first category classification and membership of the Tawteen Partners Club within the establishments’ classification system where members receive discounts of up to 80 percent on the ministry’s service fees.

However, financial penalties will be imposed on establishments that do not meet the required Emiratisation rate – a monthly penalty of AED6,000 for every UAE national that has not been appointment, starting from January 2023.

This year’s two percent Emiratisation rate is calculated as for every 50 non-Emiratis working in skilled jobs, one UAE national shall be hired.

This decision aims to achieve an increase by 10 percent in the Emiratisation rate by 2026.
