DCL intensifies soft drink test

Dubai: In the wake of increased use of soft drinks during Ramadan, the Food and Environment Lab Section of Dubai Central Laboratory at Dubai Municipality has intensified the test of quality and safety of soft drinks confirming its compliance with approved UAE specifications.

Maha Al Hajri, Head of Food and Environment Laboratory said that the soft drinks are prepared using the pure drinkable water in addition to carbohydrates such as sugar, glucose, fructose, caffeine, vitamins, amino acids and herbal extracts to give flavour and fragrance.

The process of examining samples of soft drinks chemically is using the latest technology and equipments, through which the percentage of caffeine, artificial colours, preservatives, sweeteners, natural and industrial remnants and alcohol in energy drinks can be detected,’ Maha said.

The section also undertakes periodic checks to soft drinks like counting total bacteria, coliform bacteria, fecal, yeasts and fungi to ensure consumer safety,’ she added.
