Dubai: The British Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Dominic Jermey hosted a reception on Sep 17th 2012 at the Royal Box of Dubai International Stadium at Dubai Sports City to mark the success of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for the Middle East and North African Alistair Burt was present at the event.
The event was attended by the Brazilian Ambassador to the UAE, Jo?o de Mendon?a Lima Neto, Yusouf Al Serkal, 1st Vice President of the National Olympic Committee representing the President of the NOC His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
It was also attended Mr. Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Board Member of (NOC), Khalid Abdullah Al Hussein Director of Sports Affairs at the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare, Mr. Majed Al Osaimi, Executive Director of Dubai Club for Special Sports, Mr Ahmed Mohammed Al Kamali, Board Member, UAE NOC and Head of UAE Athletics Federation in addition to Emirati, British and Brazilian dignitaries in the UAE.
The audience was pleased by the presence of UAE Paralympic Champions Abdulla Sultan Alaryani, who won a gold medal in the rifle shooting event at the London 2012 Paralympics, and Mohammed Al Hammadi, who won a silver medal in the men’s 200m and a bronze medal in the men’s T34 100m.
Minister Burt congratulated them for their accomplishments during London 2012 Games.
The event started with a speech by the British Ambassador to the UAE, Dominic Jermey, who welcomed the audience and extended his gratitude to HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. He also thanked Dubai Sports City for embracing the event which included a friendly football match and the British Law Firm Pinsent Masons for their sponsorship. The British Ambassador praised the achievements of the UAE, British and Brazilian athletes in London 2012 and talked about London 2012 legacy.
Mr. Jermey concluded: “Hosting The London 2012 Paralympic and Olympic Games was quite a hectic task but yet at the same time equally enjoyable. At the end of it we were able to look back and say, “Wow, it was really worth it!” From London, good luck and all the best Rio De Janeiro!” Minister Alistair Burt said that London 2012 offered inspiration to the new generation and raised the bar for hosting and organizing Olympic and Paralympic Games. Minister Burt expressed his confidence in Brazil’s success in 2016 Al Serkal conveyed Sheikh Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum greetings and congratulations for the British Ambassador for the success of London 2012 and His Highness good wishes for the Brazilian Ambassador for Rio 2016. Mr. Al Serkal lauded London success in hosting and organizing London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He added that London 2012 witnessed great successes and a new journey and a new circle has started for Rio de Janeiro 2016. Mr. Al Serkal wished the best for Brazil.
The Brazilian Ambassador to the UAE Jo?o de Mendon?a Lima Neto, said: “What London accomplished hosting the 2012 Olympics have been recognized by every sport loving people. In 2016, we will have the opportunity to do the same in Rio, my hometown, and be able to show the World a little of our culture and above all, of the Brazilian spirit.”
The President of Dubai Sports City Mr. Khalid Al Zarooni said: “It is indeed an honour and recognition of our vision for the development of global sport that the Olympic Handover in the UAE is being held at the Dubai International Stadium today. We are delighted to welcome representatives from the British ‘&’ Brazilian Embassies to Dubai Sports City. The cluster of major training facilities at the heart of Dubai Sports City, will play a major role in preparing competitors for future Olympics” After the speeches, a friendly football game took place between the British team and the Brazilian team. Both teams comprised of members of the British and Brazilian expats in the UAE. Minister Burt joined the British team in playing the game which ended by 1/0 in favor of Brazil.
