Remote working has made life ‘easy’ for cybercriminals: experts plot the fightback against rising attacks at GISEC 2021

DUBAI, The new work-from-home culture has made life easy for hackers thanks to common mistakes being made by everyone from big corporations to individuals, according to IT security experts at GISEC 2021, the Middle East and Africa’s most influential and connected cybersecurity event, which runs at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) until 2nd June.

Paula Januszkiewicz, CEO of CQURE, the cybersecurity firm that works in partnership with Microsoft, delivered a keynote address on day two titled ‘Hacker’s Paradise – Top 10 Biggest Threats When Working from Home’, in which she discussed how the shift to remote working has played into the hands of hackers.

The IT security expert highlighted the disabling of firewalls and reuse of passwords, or installation of over-simple passwords, as the biggest mistakes made when working from home, with systems becoming easy targets for cybercriminals.

Januszkiewicz pinpointed how a lack of server message block signing, trusting solutions without having the knowledge to break them, misusing service or privileged accounts and falling for “hipster tools”, means hackers can make quick money in the remote working era.

“Firewalls are often misconfigured, there’s no need-to-know process or protection,” she said. “Passwords are almost always re-used, or easy to guess; they invariably include the company name and a number,” she added, while giving a live demonstration of how easy hackers can pose as a colleague to access a system and company network.

“Phishing is the main means of transportation of malware, ransomware. It is fast and it is easy. The average income of someone who runs a malware or ransomware scheme is about USD 90,000. It’s good money.”

While education and awareness is key, Januszkiewicz added hackers have become a “little lazy” in the pursuit of quick money and with the right approach it is possible to limit their impact.

Matthias Schranner, a former FBI hostage negotiator and now CEO of the Schranner Negotiation Institute, set out five key steps for organisations to negotiate with cybercriminals at the GISEC Main Stage.

“I’ve been in a lot of difficult hostage negotiations; I’ve also worked undercover for six years dealing with various criminal organisations and been part of some high-value illegal transactions. One of the main things you come across with hostage takers is high demand, no cooperation. ‘If I don’t get my getaway car, I will kill the hostage’, ‘if I don’t get the money, I will not restore your system’.

“Do not waste time trying to solve the problem yourself. Companies underestimate danger and believe that their IT teams will be able to solve the problem. Every hour that passes while they try to figure out a solution will cost the business money.”

Companies should consider setting up a negotiating team and establishing proof of life, according to Schranner. “The team should comprise an internal commander and an external expert, who is not emotionally invested in the company. If the chief negotiator is emotionally involved, he or she will make mistakes; any thoughts about injustice and morality need to be set aside.

“Ransom is mostly paid in cryptocurrency such as bitcoin,” he added. “If a business wants to pay, first it needs to be able to pay, but it is not possible to buy huge amounts of bitcoin instantly, it can take two or three days. We recommend companies have a contingency fund for this. The negotiator will agree the payment details.”

MoHAP provides Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to 12-15 age group, announces availability of Sinopharm booster shot

DUBAI, The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has further expanded its COVID-19 vaccination campaign by opening up booking slots for 12 to 15-year-olds for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine through the ministry website or Covid-19 App.

The ministry also noted that those who took the second dose of the Sinopharm vaccine at least six months ago are now eligible to receive booster shots.

This came days after MoHAP has approved the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children within that age group, following the completion of clinical trials and a strict assessment conducted to approve the local emergency use of the vaccine, as well as the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This comes as part of the UAE’s relentless efforts to vaccinate the largest possible population to realize the acquired immunity, given the fact that vaccinations are considered the best medical interventions to prevent diseases and pandemics.

The approval of the vaccine for this age group is another crucial stage in the efforts being made to get more closer to the recovery phase and immunize the UAE society.

Despite the low prevalence of Covid-19 infections among children, vaccination is still very important especially with the gradual return of students to schools during the next year. This, in turn, would help enhance the sense of safety among children that their health is well maintained.

“The state’s decision to provide the Pfizer Covid vaccine to the 12 – 15 age group, in addition to the Sinopharm booster dose clearly reflects the keenness of the state’s wise leadership to immunize community health as a national priority. It is also an important input in the fight against the pandemic to reach the recovery phase and bring life back to normal, thus increasing optimism and reassurance in society,” said Dr. Hussein Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary of Health Centres and Clinics Sector.

Al Rand added, “The fruitful results achieved by the national Covid-19 vaccine campaign and the high turnout of community members being witnessed by the health centres to obtain the vaccine confirm the efficiency and effectiveness of the measures taken by the UAE government and boost confidence in the health system.”

According to global reports, the UAE is considered one of the best countries in the world in dealing with the Covid-19, thanks to the development of the health sector and the utilization of expertise and capacities to preserve the gains, he said in conclusion.

Dr. Nada Al Marzouqi, Director of Preventive Medicine Department, asserted that the Covid-19 vaccine centres are fully equipped with specialized and well-trained health cadres and medical equipment and supplies to welcome those aged 12 -15 to get the vaccine, as well as those who received their second dose of Sinopharm vaccine at least six months ago to get the booster dose. This falls within the UAE’s strenuous efforts to enhance the protection of community members from getting infected with coronavirus and maintain their health and safety.

Al Marzouqi noted that work is underway to increase the absorptive and operational capacity of vaccine centres to accommodate the increasing demand by the individuals to get the Covid-19 vaccine, emphasising that vaccination doesn’t mean that the pandemic is over. She urged community members to remain committed to precautionary and preventive measures to preserve the gains and immunize society against coronavirus mutations.

Central Bank, UAE Banks Federation, Abu Dhabi Police, Dubai Police, TDRA announce extension of successful national fraud awareness campaign

Abu Dhabi, Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), UAE Banks Federation (UBF), Abu Dhabi Police, Dubai Police, and Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) have announced today the extension of the successful Fraud Awareness Campaign, which was launched in April last year and ran throughout 2020 as the UAE’s first national fraud awareness campaign. This joint initiative gained significant traction with citizens and residents across the UAE.

The initiative, which aims to educate customers to protect themselves from financial cybercrime and fraud, particularly in light of the increased use of digital banking services during COVID-19 pandemic, has been extended for a period of one year, till the end of 2021.

Under the theme #TogetherAgainstFraud, this National Fraud Awareness Campaign will, in its second year, continue to encourage people to fight fraud with facts, and to remain vigilant against fraud of different types. Through multimedia content; including articles, educational videos, and social media posts, the campaign will raise customer awareness on how to identify scams and avoid them.

In the past few years, the global banking landscape has transformed rapidly, with physical branch networks shrinking and volume of digital payments increasing. While COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated that transformation, fraudsters across the world are creatively finding new ways to steal from banks and customers. This has prompted CBUAE, UBF, Abu Dhabi Police, Dubai Police, and Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority to extend this UAE’s National Fraud Awareness campaign, which has been running strongly across social media channels with support from UBF’s Fraud Prevention Committee and all UBF members.

This joint initiative focuses on different topics or awareness every month. Such topics include email fraud, social engineering, phone fraud, advance fee scam, business email compromise, digital banking safety, e-Commerce security, and, among others, social media privacy.

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE, said: “The extension of the national awareness campaign against financial fraud reflects the concerned authorities’ commitment to continue raising public awareness about fraud activities and their methods to protect consumers and the financial system from the threats posed by financial crimes. The increasing reliance on digital payments during Covid-19 pandemic has led to the rise of financial fraud activities also posed challenges to the banking sector, which called for joint efforts of the competent authorities to limit financial and cyber-crimes.

He added: “Through together-against-fraud campaign, the Central Bank in cooperation with the participating authorities will continue to issue a series of educational guidelines and initiatives to help community members identify scam methods and raise their security awareness.

He also called on the public to stay alert against fraudulent activities through phone calls and messages and stressed the importance of not disclosing personal and banking information to any person or entity, and to inform the relevant authorities as soon as suspicious communications are received.”

Commenting on the campaign, AbdulAziz Al-Ghurair, Chairman of UAE Banks Federation, said: “UAE is a regional leader in digital adoption and e-Commerce payments, and COVID-19 pandemic accelerated that trend. Safety regulations and physical restrictions acted as a catalyst for transactions to move from malls to mobiles. However, the ensuing uncertainty has provided a fertile environment for cybercrime. While technology has helped our UBF member banks and their customers with tools for business continuity, it remains a double-edged sword with cybercriminals and attackers using ever more sophisticated tools. In such scenarios, customer awareness and education play a critical role”.

Chairman Al-Ghurair also added and said: “the extension of our joint campaign is a step in the right direction. We must remain a few steps ahead of fraudsters, which can only be achieved if we continue to work together, and on behalf of UBF, I would like to thank Central Bank of the UAE, Abu Dhabi Police, Dubai Police, TDRA, and all UBF members for their continued support and collaboration in achieving our aim of having for everyone in the UAE be aware, agile, and alert against the risk of financial fraud.”

Major General Maktoum Ali Al-Sharifi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Police, praised the joint coordination and cooperation with UAE Banks Federation, Central Bank of the UAE, Dubai Police, and Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, for their support to achieve the goals and aspirations of UAE government in raising public awareness of the dangers of cybercrime through #TogetherAgainstFraud campaign.

He also stressed on Abu Dhabi Police’s keenness to confront cybercrime, which is considered one of the crimes in the future, which requires strengthening efforts and intensifying work with all partners to reduce this type of crime and tighten the screws on fraudsters, seize them and confront their renewed criminal methods with advanced security precautionary measures. Abu Dhabi Police have recently detected several methods that fraudsters follow them over the phone to lure their victims and seize their bank data, including making contact with victims, claiming that the victim has won false prizes and large sums of money belonging to well-known organizations, and the victim is asked to update his or her bank data and provide security numbers of his credit cards.

Director General of Abu Dhabi Police urged the public not to share any confidential information, such as account numbers, bank card numbers, passwords, personal identification codes, and the security codes on the back of the card, and not to respond to calls and deceptive messages, and to promptly report them by contacting Aman service on 8002626 or send a text message to Number 2828 and visit the website.

Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al-Mansoori, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Criminal Investigation Affairs in Dubai Police, confirmed that participation in this awareness campaign comes within the strategy of Dubai Police, which is consistent with the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Interiors that aims at enhancing security and safety by having awareness initiatives throughout the year in cooperation with strategic partners, with the aim of educating society members of various methods of crimes.

He added that the Criminal Investigation Sector, according to the directives of Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al-Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, is keen to launch several awareness campaigns on various methods of crimes, to achieve a zero crime index in the Emirate. He also requested community members not to hesitate to inform Dubai Police of any electronic fraud they might be exposed to, by filing a report via “ecrime” electronic platform through smartphones and/or Dubai Police website, stressing on the importance of not yielding to trolls and fraudsters’ requests, or sending money or submitting to their extortion in any form, and to request immediate assistance from the Police to take necessary action.

Engineer Mohamed Al-Saadi, Manager – Telecom Networks Operations at Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, said: “Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority is keen to support all initiatives aimed to enhance digital services and quality of citizens, residents and visitors’ lives, through the development and diversification of services, which requires the development of governance procedures to ensure public safety system for society, especially in light with the rapid global developments in communications, information sector and related technologies, and the high demand of banking sector’s services.

“Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority is working to support all initiatives aimed at enhancing digital services, in cooperation with its strategic partners, and is keen to take all proactive measures that ensure the highest levels of protection and safety for all vital sectors in the country, including the banking sector, in a way that will positively affect The confidence of dealers in this sector, and it devotes the leading position that the UAE plays as a global foreign capital’s direction and investment that is looking for attractive markets with the highest levels of technical development, reliability and safety.” Al-Saadi, added.

Dubai Road Facilities Construction Condition Index clocks 99%: RTA

DUBAI, Dubai’s Road Facilities Construction Condition Index has reached 98.95 percent, which translates the efforts of various teams of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The technical assessment of road facilities condition is conducted under the Bridges Maintenance Management System (BMMS).

“The Traffic and Roads Agency plays a key role in managing RTA’s infrastructure assets and protecting the deliverables of megaprojects undertaken since RTA’s inception. Achieving a 98.95 percent rating in Dubai’s Road Facilities Construction Condition Index is a result of the predictive maintenance programme and the extensive technical assessments undertaken. Such operations covered all elements of road facilities using sophisticated artificial intelligence technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Adopting such a methodology has become a crucial element of the maintenance and sustainability of Dubai infrastructure assets,” said Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA.

“Since the launch of the BMMS System in 2017, the number of inspections and assessments of operations of facilities such as bridges and tunnels has seen a remarkable increase.
