Investments in new desalination plants in UAE valued at AED7.63 billion: Suhail Al Mazrouei

ABU DHABI, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said the value of investments in new desalination plants in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Umm Al Qaiwain amounted to AED7.63 billion (US$2.08 billion), in line with the directives of the UAE’s leadership to achieve water security.

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), on the sidelines of the World Utilities Congress 2022, Al Mazrouei said the annual growth rate of the water desalination sector is at three percent. The UAE, due to the directives of its leadership, has launched several national strategic projects in the water desalination sector, which will help achieve water security by providing water supplies and ensuring their national sustainability, he added.

Al Mazrouei stressed that the UAE has prioritised the sixth sustainable development goal to ensure water sustainability and provide access to water amidst natural conditions and emergencies, affirming that water security is a cornerstone of sustainable development.

The UAE has carried out several significant projects in the water sector and deployed advanced technologies, he further added.

On the models followed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to enhance the resilience of the water and energy sector, Al Mazrouei said that the ministry, in cooperation with its partners in the energy and water sectors, has implemented the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and the National Water and Energy Demand Management Programme, which follow approved policies that include the development of the supply and demand sectors, as well as projects for improving the flexibility of the water sector to respond to emergencies, such as those aimed at linking the access of agencies to the water network and increasing the use of renewable energy in water production.

Providing electricity at reasonable prices is among the factors that will ensure the economy’s success and the community’s safety, therefore, the ministry has drafted the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 to create an energy combination that includes gas, nuclear power, solar power and wind power, he said.

The ministry has modelled, simulated and evaluated electrical power systems, in cooperation with national electricity and water service providers, to raise the flexibility of the national electricity systems and prepare for any risks that could affect the electricity sector and related vital infrastructure, he further added.

On the ministry’s plans to meet the growing national demand for water and energy, Al Mazrouei explained that the ministry’s plans include upgrading the water supply sector and completing new desalination plants using reverse osmosis technology, in addition to raising the production capacities of some existing desalination plants, in addition to efficiently recycling water.

The rate of use of treated wastewater must be 95 percent, according to indicators of the approved water security strategy, while demand management and rationalisation programmes will also contribute to reducing total water consumption rates by some 21 percent until 2036, he added.

Al Mazrouei then pointed out that the UAE is currently promoting the use of the latest advanced membrane desalination technologies and renewable energy in desalination processes, in addition to artificial intelligence, data and modelling applications in water management.

The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 aims to ensure financial and environmental sustainability for the water sector instead of continuing the current situation, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of desalination plants by the equivalent of 100 million tonnes, Al Mazrouei said in conclusion.

Investment in new ideas, technology and inclusivity to drive Middle East tourism sector

DUBAI, As tourism destinations in the Middle East are widening their appeal and extending their offerings to attract FDI, global ministers of tourism convened at the 2022 Middle East Tourism Investment Summit on the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) Global Stage to shine a spotlight on access to project finance in the post-COVID-19 era and discuss investment opportunities and challenges for destination tourism in the region.

Hosted jointly by ATM and the International Tourism & Investment Conference (ITIC), the summit began with a Ministerial Roundtable with participation from Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and SMEs & Chairman of Emirates Tourism Council of the UAE; Nayef Al Fayez, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Jordan; Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, and Philda Nani Kereng, Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, Botswana.

Shedding new light on the Middle East and the UAE as a financial hub for future worldwide tourism investment, Dr Ahmad Al Falasi said: “For the UAE hospitality accommodation sector, investment in rooms and keys remains a primary focus as evidenced by a 5% growth in the number of rooms compared to 2019 levels, with a variation of service levels and accommodation type. However, while the big-ticket FDI will continue to grow in terms of rooms, from the service side, we see a lot of venture capital deployed on technological solutions for tourism. As the customer demand for elevated tourism experiences continues to evolve, we see technology as an important investment area in the future. So, while recovery is going well, we need to be mindful of being equitable in our recovery to ensure that the whole ecosystem benefits.”

According to recent forecasts, the total contribution of the travel and tourism industry to the GDP of Middle East countries is expected to reach around US$ 486.1 billion by 2028. Governments across the region are attracting hefty investments in their tourism industry, with Bahrain attracting US$ 492 million of tourism capital investment in 2020, for example, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia earmarking US$ 1 trillion to its travel and tourism sector through to 2030.

The audience heard from Jordan’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Nayef Al Fayez, who discussed the continued investment in the country’s SME and start-up ecosystem to ensure that not it not only survived the pandemic but that it continued to thrive with women, youth and local communities empowered as a vital pillar of Jordan’s tourism industry.

Similarly, Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, described how investment in knowledge development and new ideas is a vast new dimension to enable innovation in the country’s travel and tourism sector. Tourism investments will have to change to bridge the supply disruption gaps and build back the capacity of tourism to be the driver of economic growth and development.

Discussing the outlook for tourism in post-pandemic Botswana, Philda Nani Kereng, Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, explained: “In investing in the tourism sector, we want to meet the needs of the tourist that emerges out of COVID-19 by developing a new diversified tourism product. This is a tourist that wants new experiences, to heal from the lockdown and to engage with the local culture and biodiversity of the destination.”

“ATM’s strategy is to support the industry with a summit that acts as a platform for tourism ministers, policymakers, industry leaders and investors to discuss topical issues, challenges and future trends in the sustainable development of tourism and travel throughout the region,” said Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market.

Elsewhere on the agenda on Day 2, industry leaders took to the ATM Global Stage to discuss the evolution of the aviation sector while marketing and consumer consultancy D/A explored how brands can more effectively connect with the Arabic travel audience.

Moving forward, highlights on Day 3 include an in-depth discussion on the ATM Global Stage about the future of the region’s hotel industry and the importance of unique dining experiences as an essential tool in the destination marketing playbook. On the ATM Travel Tech Stage, the audience will hear research into travel’s new normal following the global pandemic, and how Web 3.0 technologies, such as the metaverse, blockchain and artificial intelligence, can be used as tools to drive the advancement of travel services.

DUBAI, Emirates, renowned for its award-winning products and services, is launching a new hospitality-based strategy which will take the customer experiences that its teams deliver on ground and in the air, to new heights.

The programme will be one of the biggest people, process, and product initiatives ever implemented at the airline, touching all frontline customer facing teams as well as supporting departments.

Adel Al Redha, Chief Operating Officer at Emirates, said: “Even while managing the immediate challenges of the pandemic during the past two years, Emirates did not hesitate to keep driving forward initiatives to ensure our customers keep “flying better” for the foreseeable future.

“Emirates already has a signature service that our customers value and makes us unique. What we’re doing through our new hospitality strategy, is providing our teams with even more bandwidth and skills to build stronger, more personalised, and relevant connections with our customers at every moment of their journey with us. We’ll achieve that by investing in technologies, refining elements of our processes, and empowering our people to be our most effective and real brand ambassadors.”

Al Redha added: “The learning programme for our new hospitality strategy will be rolled out starting from June, and refresher courses in the programme will continue to ensure the consistency of our customer experience.”

With expert support from Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), consistently rated amongst the world’s top hospitality management schools, Emirates is creating its next generation hospitality programme based on bespoke principles that reflect its unique DNA. The programme aims to drive consistency across all touchpoints and provide a framework for teams to deliver signature moments that evoke emotions and create positive memories and feelings for Emirates’ customers.

Emirates has already incorporated elements of its new hospitality principles into its soon-to-launch Premium Economy service, as its cabin crew learn how to deliver Emirates’ latest inflight experience from food presentation and offering of welcome drinks, to complimentary amenities and other little touches. Earlier this week, the airline announced that it will offer its full-service Premium Economy experience for sale in June, for customers flying on select routes starting from 1st August 2022.

They will be part of the core team involved in deploying the airline’s hospitality learning experience initiatives starting from June.

The airline is setting up an internal Emirates Hospitality Centre of Excellence to engage and co-ordinate the roll-out of the programme across the diverse teams at Emirates involved in delivering customer experiences – including cabin crew, airport services employees, contact centre teams, catering, inflight products, training, recruitment, sales and marketing, and more.
