The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the largest single-site solar park in the world using the Independent Power Producer model with a planned production capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030. DEWA is currently implementing the 4th and 5th phases of the solar park. The current production capacity of the solar park is 1,727 MW using photovoltaic solar panels. DEWA is implementing other projects in the solar park with a total of 1,133 MW using photovoltaic solar panels and concentrated solar power technologies. This raises the clean energy share in Dubai’s energy mix to 12.1% and is expected to reach 14% by the end of this year.

The 5th phase is currently underway with a total capacity of 900 MW and investments estimated at AED 2.58 billion. It will be operated in phases until 2023. The 4th phase of the solar park, with a capacity of 950 MW and investments amounting to AED 15.78 billion according to the IPP model, is considered the largest concentrated single-site solar power plant that combines CSP and solar photovoltaic technologies. This phase will use three hybrid technologies: 600MW from a parabolic basin complex (three units of 200MW each), 100MW from the world’s tallest solar power tower at 262.44 metres (based on Molten Salt technology), and 250MW from photovoltaic solar panels. On its completion, the project will have the largest thermal storage capacity in the world of 15 hours, allowing for energy availability round the clock. The 4th phase will provide clean energy for around 320,000 residences and reduce 1.6 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

DEWA’s Space-D programme

DEWA’s space programme (Space-D) aims to improve the operations, maintenance, and planning of its networks with the support of nanosatellite technology, Internet of Things (IoT), and remote sensing technologies. The programme also aims to train Emirati professionals to use space technologies to enhance its electricity and water networks and take advantage of the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as IoT, AI, and blockchain to exchange information with the help of satellite communications and earth observation technologies. In January 2022, DEWA launched DEWA-SAT 1 nanosatellite in collaboration with NanoAvionics, becoming the world’s first utility to use nanosatellites to improve the maintenance and planning of electricity and water networks. The nanosatellite was designed and developed at DEWA’s Research and Development (R&D) Centre in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

Green Hydrogen project

DEWA is implementing the green hydrogen project in cooperation with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. It is a key project in supporting the UAE’s efforts to achieve global competitiveness in the green hydrogen market. Implementing the project, which is the first of its kind in the MENA to produce hydrogen using solar energy at the Solar Park and contributes to achieving competitive prices in producing green hydrogen. The production of green hydrogen is mainly carried out through electrolysis using renewable energy sources.

Youth Councils are pivotal in fostering ambitions and aspirations of the young generation: IGCF 2022

SHARJAH, Representatives of the UAE’s Youth Councils have emphasised that consistent support from official entities and the community are crucial to meet the ambitions and aspirations of the young generation during the Fourth Sharjah Youth Forum hosted on the opening day of the 11th International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) at Expo Centre Sharjah.

At the session titled ‘Youth Council’s Challenges and Opportunities’, representatives pointed out the importance of hands-on training for young journalists and media personnel to overcome the challenges they face in the workplace.

Khalifa Al Muheiri, former member of the Dubai Youth Council, said, “Councils serve as an important channel to boost and motivate aspirations of youth and listen to their ideas. The councils, in general, add value to all members.”

“There are two types of youth – those who take the initiative to develop themselves and those who do not wish to change at all. Our role is to find solutions to encourage the second type of youth,” he added, underscoring that the Dubai Youth Council has launched a number of initiatives and organises meetings and engaging activities to enhance the knowledge of young generations with future skills.

For his part, Abdelaziz Ahmed Fikri, Chair of the third batch of Sharjah Youth Council, emphasised that over the past four years, the IGCF has served as an ideal platform to convene the UAE youth and listen to their suggestions and nurture their ambitions.

“There are many misconceptions about Youth Councils as some youth join us to seek job opportunities, but this is not our specialisation,” he added.

Maitha Ali Al Gergawi, a former member of the Media Youth Council (MYC), remarked that the organisation, which was formed in collaboration with several media entities, has attracted the membership of many contemporary media and TV representatives.

Al Gergawi stressed that MYC opened its doors to empower youth and facilitate their access to a host of opportunities in the media field. She added: “Some of the most critical challenges that the youth face are vocational training as media entities offer plenty of theoretical training, but graduates fail to gain hands-on expertise.”

Dubai Chamber of Commerce introduces business community to UAE corporate tax system

Over 330 participants took part in a recent workshop hosted by the Chamber, which examined the requirements and processes related to the new corporate tax system.

Dubai Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a workshop on the UAE Corporate Tax system at its headquarters, which was attended by over 330 participants from the business community, representing various economic sectors.

Organised in collaboration with leading law firm Al Tamimi & Co., the workshop supported the Chamber’s efforts to keeping companies informed of key legal developments that are transforming the business environment.

During the event, participants were briefed on how corporate tax will be implemented in the UAE, highlighting the expected impact it will have on corporate profits. The session also sought to educate attendees on how to comply with tax requirements and plan for a smooth transition for when the new tax comes into effect.

The UAE had recently announced the introduction of the Corporate Tax system, set to be implemented in June 2023, where tax will be collected at a basic rate of 9% on company profits exceeding AED 375,000, while a rate of 0% will be calculated for companies whose profits fall below the threshold, in an effort to support startups and SMEs.

During the workshop, Shiraz Khan, partner, and Eunice Nanos, advisor, at Al Tamimi & Co., provided a detailed overview of the new corporate tax system, along with guidelines and recommendations for businesses to follow in order to prepare for implementing the system and complying with its requirements. The speakers also outlined exceptions and exemptions, as well as the effects the system is expected to have on companies and businesses.

Addressing participants, Jehad Kazim, Vice President of Legal Services at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, noted that the UAE Corporate Tax system is aligned with best international practices, and mentioned that the tax rate is relatively low in comparison with international markets.

She added that the strong turnout to the workshop reflected a growing awareness of the new tax system among businesses in Dubai, as well as their interest in learning and adopting best practices.

For his part, Shiraz Khan said: “The introduction of federal Corporate Tax marks a significant shift in the UAE’s tax system. It is crucial for companies to understand the rules and how they will be applied to ensure they are in full compliance with the system’s requirements. We are certainly delighted to be collaborating with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce on this training workshop, which is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the system and how to prepare companies to implement it.”

Dubai Chamber of Commerce regularly organises workshops around topics of interest to the business sector in the emirate, in a bid to raise awareness among them about legal developments that impact the business environment, while striving to establish an ecosystem that incentivises and supports businesses.
