Safadi contacts foreign ministers on Amman consultative meeting on Syria

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi Tuesday talked over the phone with the foreign ministers of Sweden, Spain, France and the UK and the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy about the Amman Consultative Meeting on Syria.

Safadi explained to his counterparts the “importance” of the meeting, which is part of the Jordanian initiative and that of Saudi and other Arab efforts and contacts, in starting a dialogue with the Syrian government to end the Syrian crisis.

Safadi noted the agreement, which was reflected in the joint final statement issued at the meeting. He informed his counterparts that the meeting outcomes would contribute to solving the Syrian crisis and addressing “major” issues such as the issue of refugees, border security, terrorism and drug smuggling.

Sudan warring parties agree 7-day truce starting Thursday

The South Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tuesday announced that the two parties to the conflict in Sudan have agreed to a seven-day truce starting Thursday, May 4.

The ministry stated that the Sudanese army commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, “agreed in principle to a truce for seven days between 4 and 11 May.”

Israeli warplanes pummel Gaza

Israeli warplanes Tuesday evening have started bombing several areas in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources.

The Israeli planes targeted the north and south of Gaza with missiles, where the sounds of explosions were heard across the strip.

A spokesman for the Israeli army said the Israeli forces “have begun launching raids in the Gaza Strip now.”
