Supreme Authority for Medicines destroyed 60 tons of smuggled and non-conforming medicines

The Supreme Authority for Medicines and Medical Supplies destroyed today, Thursday,60 tons of smuggled, non-conforming and counterfeit medicines.

During the destruction process, the Deputy Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Mutahar Al-Marouni, confirmed that the destruction comes within the framework of combating drug smuggling and the continuation of control efforts to seize expired, non-conforming and counterfeit medicines.

He praised the efforts of the Supreme Authority for Medicines in the process of follow-up, control of markets and control of such medicines, stressing the continuation of the Ministry of Health represented by the Supreme Authority for Medicines in monitoring the drug market through its field committees, whether in pharmaceutical facilities or at security points.

Dr. Al-Marouni expressed his hope that drug importers would coordinate with the Supreme Authority for Medicines and commit to importing quality medicines, appropriate prices, conformity to specifications and standards.

For his part, the head of the Supreme Authority for Medicines and Medical Supplies, Dr. Ali Abbas, stated that 60 tons of smuggled, non-conforming, counterfeit and expired medicines were destroyed, stressing that these medicines were seized by the authority’s field committees for the control of pharmaceutical facilities and the drug market, as well as at security points.

Dr. Abbas praised the role of the security services in seizing smuggled and counterfeit medicines at various ports and security points, as well as the authority’s field committees.

The head of the authority called on citizens and pharmacists to report any expired, smuggled or counterfeit medicines that do not conform to specifications and standards in order to preserve the safety of citizens.

He also affirmed that the authority continues to implement campaigns and field visits to control drug wholesalers to verify permits, search for and confiscate smuggled and infringing drugs, as well as verify the storage conditions of medicines.

During the destruction process, in the presence of representatives of the Public Prosecution Office of Industry, Commerce and Environmental Health, Adel Al-Haddad and Bassam Al-Akhali, The Director of the Control Department at the Supreme Authority for Medicines, Dr. Omar Al-Junaid, referred to the Authority’s efforts to provide safe and quality medicine, stop smuggling operations, and prevent the entry of any unsafe medicine to market.

He stressed that the authority’s field monitoring committees confiscate any smuggled, unknown-origin drugs and take legal measures against violators, and refer them to the competent authorities.
