The Jordanian-Italian Conference: “New Horizons for Cooperation in Healthcare between Jordan and Italy” kicked off Monday in Amman. The event is organized by University of Jordan (UJ) with the participation of MEBIC Consortium in Italy, Academic Union (HUMANITAS) and their partners. The conference aims to present a joint collaborative project that provides fully funded scholarships in medical training offered by MEBIC Consortium to Jordanian physicians and lay the foundation for building close cooperation between the two countries, according to a UJ statement. Speaking at the conference, in presence of Italian Ambassador to Amman, Luciano Pezzotti, and representatives of Jordan’s various medical and health sectors, UJ President, Nazir Obeidat, said Jordan and Italy share multiple common values, expressing appreciation for this initiative that seeks to support Jordan’s medical education and health system. Obeidat referred to strengths of Jordan’s medical sector, including the vaccination program, which is viewed one of the best in the region, as well as abundance of graduate physicians and their “distinguished” level at home and abroad. He also pointed to the challenges facing the Kingdom’s medical system, primarily need to pump additional specialist physicians in a number of medical sub-specialties and problem of the refugee influx, which added an additional burden for Jordan’s health sector. Addressing the event, the Italian ambassador said the conference constitutes a “remarkable” opportunity to find bases for joint cooperation in the medical field, especially since Italian government has always provided support and grants to Jordanian students to continue their studies in Italy. The envoy expressed admiration for the “distinguished” Jordan’s medical sector, hoping to enhance joint cooperation in this vital field.
