Sheikha Bodour confers degrees on 670 students at AUS Spring 2023 Commencement

SHARJAH, 11th June, 2023 (WAM) — ‘In a way, you’re better equipped for real life than previous generations of university graduates,’ having ‘completed your studies through an unprecedented global pandemic,’ said Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of American University of Sharjah (AUS), at the university’s Spring 2023 Commencement ceremony held on June 10 at University City Hall in Sharjah. Marching to the rousing ‘Towards a New Life’, Op. 35c by Josef Suk, 670 undergraduate and graduate students followed the banners representing their four colleges amid cheers from friends and families, to take their place on the stage and receive their degrees. Sheikha Bodour congratulated the graduates and shared three reflections that had shaped her life, quoting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Maya Angelou, and Gibran Khalil Gibran respectively. She said: ‘Do not twist yourself to please others. When you’re young, it’s hard to assert your cultural identity for fear of being rejected. Always remember who you are and where you came from () People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. It’s easy to focus on individual success and overlook the importance of kindness. A small act of kindness has an impact far beyond our immediate perception; be kind to yourself, be kind to your parents, and to those less fortunate than you () Trust in dreams for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Let your dreams guide you and allow them to ignite your passion. You’ll be surprised how much you can achieve and contribute to the world.’ In her opening remarks, AUS Chancellor Dr. Susan Mumm wished the Class of Spring 2023 continued success. ‘Congratulations on this remarkable achievement. You have persevered to reach where you are today, joining a growing community of AUS alumni who have distinguished themselves through their personal and professional accomplishments. As you know, we have celebrated AUS’ 25 years of excellence and the vision of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and Founder of AUS, over the past year. We look forward to the next 25. We want to build on our successes to secure a better tomorrow for all. AUS has impressively carved a place for itself in the world as a highly reputed academic institution and research centre, nurturing graduates of the highest caliber, and you are living proof of the transformational power of an AUS education,’ she said. During the ceremony, Sheikha Bodour awarded Hind Khalid Alharmoodi, a civil engineering major, and Zaineh Moez Al-Nasser, an electrical engineering major, the President’s Cup for the highest-grade point average, and Rameesha Nayyer Siddiqi, a finance major, the Chancellor’s Cup for an outstanding combination of academic excellence, general character, and service to the university. Siddiqi achieved a GPA of 3.84 and was active in the Student Leadership Programme; took part in community service and outreach initiatives; and served on the boards of the Gastronomy Club, Pakistani Cultural Club, and the AUS Student Council. She was also the recipient of the Active Student Scholarship Spring 2022 and worked as a Peer Mentor from 2021 to 2023. Addressing the graduating class of Spring 2023 was student speaker Sarah Jamjoom, who said: ‘We will go on to become the leaders of tomorrow I cannot guarantee this path will be easy. We will face challenges nonetheless, we will leave this hall equipped to face what is out there. We will adapt and grow in the real world just as we learned to adapt to the diverse social settings and the rigorous academic environment at AUS. Let us push beyond our comfort zones and leave our mark wherever we step. Let us recognize our talents, nurture them, and build on them. As Sheikha Bodour once said, “We all have gifts and talents to bring to the world, so let them shine.”‘

UAE expresses solidarity with Somalia and offers condolences over munitions explosion

ABU DHABI, 11th June, 2023 (WAM) — The UAE expressed its sincere condolences and solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia over the munitions explosion that took place south of the capital Mogadishu which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries to numerous people. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the government and people of Somali and to the families of the victims, and its wishes for a speedy recovery for all the injured. UAE condemns terrorist attack targeting hotel in Mogadishu

ABU DHABI, 11th June, 2023 (WAM) — The UAE strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted a hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, which resulted in numerous deaths and injuries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) affirmed that the UAE expresses its strong condemnation of these criminal acts and its permanent rejection of all forms of violence, extremism, and terrorism aimed at undermining security and stability in contravention of human values and principles. The Ministry also expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the Somali government and people and the families of the victims of this terrorist act, as well as its wishes for a speedy recovery for all the injured. MoHAP to launch ‘Nebras: My Journey in the World of Nursing and Midwifery Research’ initiative

DUBAI,11th June, 2023 (WAM) — The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced it will launch “Nebras” initiative in collaboration with Pfizer, one of the world’s premier biopharmaceutical companies, in a move aimed at bolstering research in the nursing and midwifery fields. The Supreme National Committee for Nursing and Midwifery will unveil the “Nebras: My Journey in the World of Nursing and Midwifery Research” initiative during a press conference scheduled for June 15. The initiative aims to enhance the research capabilities of Nursing and Midwifery cadres, empowering them to actively contribute to scientific research in line with national health priorities and research agendas outlined in the national strategy for nursing and midwifery (2022-2026). By supporting the UAE Centennial 2071 and fostering the development of Nursing and Midwifery care services, the initiative will not only play a significant role in the creation of knowledge, manuals, and concepts within these professions, but will also strengthen the position of Nursing and Midwifery in UAE society, making them an appealing career choice for young national talents. Nebras is designed to fulfill the objectives of the national strategy for nursing and midwifery (2022-2026), with a specific focus on promoting “scientific research and evidence-based practices.” It aims to facilitate the execution of research studies that provide valuable insights to guide initiatives outlined in the national strategy. Additionally, the initiative seeks to cultivate a national research culture within the fields of Nursing and Midwifery, while promoting evidence-based policies and clinical practices in response to national health priorities. “Nebras” will introduce a national guidance programme within the nursing and midwifery research field. As part of this programme, experts in nursing and midwifery research will be invited to apply to serve as mentors following an introductory workshop that they will attend. The programme also offers opportunities for nursing and midwifery personnel nationwide to present their research ideas as potential interns. Once the suitable ideas are selected, each intern is assigned a mentor. Together, they develop a guidance plan and set a mutually agreed timeline within a comprehensive electronic platform.
