The Permanent Representative of Libya to the UN, Taher Al-Sonni, met yesterday at the headquarters of the Libyan mission in New York with Ambassador “Kamihiro Ishikani,” the representative of Japan to the UN, and the head of the UN Security Council’s sanctions committee established under Security Council Resolution No. 1970 on Libya, and they discussed the latest political developments in Libya and efforts made to complete consensus on the electoral laws.

Al-Sonni said in a tweet that the meeting discussed the work mechanisms of the sanctions committee and clarified their observations and reservations about the methods of work of the committee in general, especially in the issue of the names placed on the sanctions list, as Libya had requested a time ago to remove the names of a number of citizens from that list, whether for humanitarian reasons or because there are no reasons for their presence on it.

“We conveyed to Ambassador Ishikani the position of the Government of National Unity on the responsibility of the Sanctions Committee for the inhuman situation in which the citizen, Hannibal Gaddafi, has been forcibly detained in Lebanon for 8 years without any right or legal basis, and the need for joint action to release him without delay and not to politicize the case, as we have made clear the importance of working with the joint committee established by the Presidency Council with the government to follow up on this file with the concerned and competent authorities.” Al-Sonni added.
