600,000 displaced people living tough conditions in Iraq – Pres.

Iraq’s President Abdul Latif Rashid said Sunday that approximately 600,000 internally displaced persons are enduring extremely complex and challenging circumstances in Iraq.

He made the statement during his meeting with Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director of the Regional Office for Arab States at the United Nations Development Programme, Abdullah Aldurderi at Baghdad Palace.

President Rashid called for developing the existing relationship between Iraq and the United Nations through its specialized agencies, underscoring the need to enhance and develop these ties to achieve the desired objectives of supporting Iraq.

The meeting also addressed the water crisis faced by Iraq due to the water policies of neighboring countries and the absence of effective water management and electricity production, the statement noted.

For his part, the UN official reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Iraq, hailing this Arab country’s security and stability.

Kuwait celebrates 62nd Independence Day Mon.

June 19 of 1961 is a pivotal day in the history of Kuwait as it marks the end of the British protection treaty and the emergence of the modern state. On this day, Kuwait, a newly independent sovereign state, took its first steps in the journey of development.

The late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem had signed the declaration of independence with the British Government Chief Political Resident in the Arabian Gulf Sir George Middleton.

Three years after the declaration, a decree was signed on May 18, 1964 merging the national day with the day in which Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem assumed office, making it February 25. Celebrations were held on that day as of 1965.

Since assuming office in 1950, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem took carefully measured steps paving the way for independence, and achieving stability.

The 15-year reign of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem, who was dubbed “father of independence” and “father of constitution” was peppered with achievements.

The State of Kuwait became member in the Arab League on July 20, 1961.

Sheikh Abdullah signed decree on August 26, 1961 to hold elections of the Constituent Assembly, mandated with writing the constitution.

The 183-article comprehensive constitution was completed in nine months, it laid the foundations for a sturdy democratic regime putting the Kuwaiti people on a path of progress and prosperity.

On September 7, 1961, an Amiri decree was signed specifying the shape and colors of the Kuwaiti flag, the very first flag to be flown following the independence.

At that time, the State of Kuwait accomplished 43 laws and legislation, including the nationality law, monetary law, passports law and the organization of government departments.

New departments were established in order to cope with the development of the nation, like public works, health, publication, knowledge, municipality, post and telephone, electricity and water, social affairs, awqaf, radio and television.

Over the past 62 years, Kuwait had become reputable for its humanitarian contributions and its levelheaded foreign policy. Today, under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait remains on a steady path of preventative diplomacy, crises mediation and effort contributing to solving outstanding regional and international issues.

Arab League, EU reiterate just peace in Palestine

Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmad Aboul-Gheit and EU High Representative Josep Borrell affirmed on Sunday previously agreed constants for making just and permanent peace in Palestine according to international legitimacy resolutions.

In a press release, the Arab League said that this came during a meeting held at its headquarters in Cairo, during which both sides discussed the historical relations between the two organizations, several topics of common interests, latest regional developments, and the Palestinian issue in particular.

Both sides stressed the importance of an independent Palestinian state, the Arabic peace initiative and the two-state solution, it said.

They also discussed the crises of Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Ukraine, it added.

Sudan warring parties vow commitment to renewed truce

Sudan’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have vowed to observe the new humanitarian ceasefire brokered by Saudi Arabia and the US.

The nationwide truce, which went into effect at 6am (04:00 GMT) on Sunday, will last until June 21, according to a joint statement from Riyadh and Washington.

The Sudanese army said in a statement late Saturday that it would commit itself to the renewed truce, but warned that it would respond to any potential violation.

In a similar statement, the paramilitary forces vowed that they would observe the ceasefire nationwide only out of humanitarian considerations, chiefly aid and hospital access.

The US and Saudi Arabia have been mediating between Sudan’s warring parties for weeks, and multiple ceasefire agreements failed to stop the fighting.

Kuwait dispatches its 15th aid plane to Sudan

The State of Kuwait on Sunday sent its 15th Air Force aircraft carrying 10 tons of food and medical supplies to violence-hit Sudan.

The aid plane is part of Kuwait’s humanitarian initiative “Kuwait Is by Your Side”, and was directed by Kuwait’s political leadership, aiming at helping the Sudanese people amid their country’s tough circumstances due to ongoing fighting there, Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) Media Chief Khaled Al-Zeid told KUNA.

Since Kuwait’s relief aid airlift was launched, 150 tons of humanitarian aid have been dispatched to Sudan, he said, noting that the charity is doing its utmost to ease out the humanitarian consequences of the current situation in Sudan.

The Kuwaiti cabinet had decided to dispatch urgent food and medical aid to Sudan under the direction of the country’s political leadership in a bid to alleviate the humanitarian reflections of this Arab country’s crisis triggered by ongoing fighting between the army and paramilitary forces.
