China’s high-speed rail revolutionises domestic travel

BEIJING: High-speed Fuxing trains have revolutionised transportation in China, enabling easier travel across its large population. These advanced trains are the product of collaboration among over 2,100 businesses, People’s Daily Online reported.

Producing a single Fuxing set requires over 40,000 components sourced from some 20 Chinese provinces. This extensive supply chain network sees parts large and small produced across the country and delivered with precision to state-run China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) for final assembly.

As the prime contractor leading China’s rail industry, CRRC drives an integrated web of over 6,000 suppliers in related sectors. Regional clusters have emerged, with Zhuzhou in Hunan and Chengdu in Sichuan emerging as centres for rail equipment manufacturing.

The superb quality of Fuxing trains is evidenced by their stability at high speeds, allowing even coins to balance on their edges while traveling between cities. This stability relies on continual innovation, suc
h as a breakthrough on shock absorbers achieved through a decade-long partnership between CRRC and Zhuzhou Lince Group.

Domestic shock absorbers are now among the world’s best according to CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive, with over 300 suppliers guided to higher standards through technology transfers. Cities like Zhuzhou have leveraged this industrial know-how to specialize, with over 80% of rail components sourced locally and trains delivered abroad ahead of schedule.

As the backbone of regional and intercity travel, China’s high-speed revolution shows how coordinated innovation can uplift an industry from local level up. With private enterprises, research institutes, and different tiers of government working as one integrated network, infrastructure achievements once deemed impossible are becoming realities at home and overseas.
