Green economy; opportunity to propel growth: Pundits

Experts and specialists have stressed the importance of accelerating the transition towards a green economy, and adopting environmentally-friendly investments, in line with the global trend to reduce the negative impacts of climate change, contribute to reaching the desired economic growth, and provide sustainable job opportunities. In interviews with the Jordan News Agency (Petra), they said that enabling Jordan to create its competitiveness in green economy requires having appropriate legislative frameworks, encouraging local development and innovation of green products and solutions for all sectors, and training and entrepreneurship. This is in addition to building an effective regulatory framework and good governance that encourages the private sector to invest in this field. Abdullah Badir, a member of the Jordan Green Building Council, indicated that the green economy is an economic model that allows for economic growth in a socially comprehensive manner that complies with environmental standards and in a way that reduces carbon emissions and pollution, ensures efficient resource use and prevents biodiversity loss. Pointing to the World Bank Group’s Country Climate and Development Report on Jordan, Badir said that investment in clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency will provide a large number of jobs between 2020-2050. The National Green Growth Plan, launched by the Ministry of Environment and the Global Green Growth Institute, listed many projects in six main sectors, including water, energy, agriculture, waste management, transport and tourism, he added. In Turn, Hamza Al-Olayani, a specialist in energy affairs and the Government Investment Management Company’s member of the board of directors, said that Jordan has launched 86 green growth projects to protect the environment, directly or indirectly, as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to confront climate change, through a package of supportive laws, regulations and guidelines. He also noted that the Cabinet approved the national policy for climate change for 2022-2050, which was prepared by a national committee to reach net zero carbon emissions on or before 2050. Jordan has doubled down on its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 31 percent by 2030, by increasing projects in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, transitioning to electric transport and public transportation, exerting efforts to establish an integrated system for waste management, and approving national action plans for the country’s green growth for the six key sectors, he also indicated.
