Ushuaia: A major magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said. The earthquake’s impact was significant, occurring more than 700 km southeast of Argentina’s city of Ushuaia, which has a population of about 57,000.
According to Emirates News Agency, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) revised the quake’s magnitude, initially reported at 8, and confirmed it hit at a depth of 11 km. The quake’s location and magnitude prompted Chile’s Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service to issue a tsunami warning for its Antarctic territory. The warning followed the quake’s occurrence 258 km northwest of the Base Frei site, as detailed in a bulletin from the service.
