More than 10,000 people evacuated due to floods in Kazakhstan

NUR SULTAN: The Kazakh Ministry of Emergencies announced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people, half of them children, in seven regions due to floods caused by the rapid melting of snow.

The ministry said in a statement that 10,587 people, including 5,101 children, were evacuated in the regions of Turkistan, Aktobe, Kostanay, West Kazakhstan, Akmola, Ulytau and Abai. There are also 5,497 people in temporary accommodation centres, including 1,739 children.

Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov had earlier said that the current floods in the country are the largest in recent years.
