The representative of Russia confirms that the way out of the current situation in Libya is through an agreement to hold elections.

Russia’s representative to the UN Security Council confirmed today, Monday, that the way out of the current situation in Libya is through an agreement to hold national elections as soon as possible.

In a speech during the Security Council session on Libya, he said that international mediation should focus on providing full support for conducting inclusive elections for all political forces in Libya, to ensure the acceptance of the election results by the Libyan society and to prevent the military situation in Libya from worsening.

The Russian delegate added that the developments in Libya do not give a glimmer of hope, pointing out that Libya is on the brink of a move to launch to hold parliamentary and presidential elections very soon.

He welcomed the work of the 5 + 5 committee, stressing that achieving progress and reaching a stage of calm requires continuous work to ensure a coordinated, balanced and gradual withdrawal of all units and foreign fighters from Libya.

The Russian delegate called on all parties in Libya to reach an acceptable consensus on overcoming the current political stalemate, pointing out that any unilateral initiative by foreigners without the participation of all regional and international actors and Libyans will not achieve its goals.
