ABU DHABI, The Command and Control Centre of the Abu Dhabi Police received 38,000 calls on its emergency hotline 999 during the Eid Al Adha holiday from callers in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dhafra.

Brigadier Nasser Al Maskari, Head of Central Operations, said the Command and Control Centre was well prepared to receive calls round-the-clock, noting that most calls were for minor traffic accidents, traffic jams or some emergency cases.

“We provided the best services to the community. We coordinated with other local authorities to reach out to all emergencies as soon as possible,” added.

He called on the public to cooperate with the initiatives launched by the Security Media Department, which aims to create more awareness about police services and other activities.

“Members of the community should not hesitate to contact emergency number 999 in case they face any emergency at any time,” he added.

DUBAI, The Dubai Police Security Committee to secure the UAE’s Golden Jubilee Tour has revealed an integrated security plan to ensure the safety of all participants during the activities of the tour in all its stages.

The plan was discussed during the periodic meeting of the security committee, in the presence of all members and working teams from all government entities.

During the meeting, participants were briefed on the preparations by the Dubai Police and traffic and logistic arrangements and necessities. Moreover, the teams were assigned their roles and tasks.

Colonel Jumah bin Suwaidan, Acting Director of the General Department of Traffic, confirmed the necessity to ensure cooperation with the government and private partners to complete all traffic arrangements and procedures related to the tour.

He further explained that it is important to coordinate timings and dates of streets closures, as well as to ensure the safety of cyclists while maintaining the smooth flow of traffic.

DUBAI, The Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) that the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organises, promotes the use of disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), 3D printing, and unmanned aerial vehicles for designing solar-powered houses.

This enhances the UAE’s position as a key platform for innovators and creative minds around the world. It also supports DEWA’s efforts to promote innovation in sustainability and encourage youth from around the world to develop innovative solutions that support global climate action as well as the transition to a more sustainable lifestyle to protect the environment and its natural resources. The SDME is organised under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council in Dubai.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said that the second SDME has attracted innovative projects that promote the culture of sustainability in the UAE and Dubai.

“Our vision is guided by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to empower the youth and engage them in the development process as well as anticipate and shape the future. We also aim to enhance their contribution to achieving sustainable development goals through research using the latest innovative technologies,” Al Tayer said.

One of the most notable projects is by the University of Sharjah team, whose sustainable house focuses on enhancing cooperation between humans and machines to perform daily tasks for a comfortable living. The house develops the industrial, social and environmental skills of its residents, with spaces designated for virtual and physical workshops and a fabrication lab with flexible computer-controlled tools such as 3D modelling and computer-aided design to meet home needs. The house alerts residents on energy and sustainability usage to preserve energy and resources. The design of the building is based on the concept of “a box within a box” where the outer layer provides protection from the external climate while attracting sunlight to generate solar power. Meanwhile, the inner layer maintains a moderate temperature inside the house.

The house offers ample scope for recycling and sorting kitchen waste, treating and reusing 100 percent of wastewater, as well as other resources. Various parts of the house can be converted into a design studio or into a virtual reality station to conduct further tests before starting the manufacturing and 3D printing phase.

“The Solar Decathlon Middle East offers an extraordinary opportunity for university teams to be challenged in an international real-life scenario, and for the students to be exposed to the industrial sector. For this reason, the University of Sharjah presents a project that combines sustainability and innovation, by stimulating environmental awareness among future professionals, to educate a ‘green’ generation that is ready for the world’s next challenges,” said Professor Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies from the University of Sharjah.

DEWA organised the first SDME in 2018, for the first time in the Middle East and Africa, and is organising the second SDME in conjunction with Expo 2020 Dubai at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park as part of a partnership between DEWA, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and the US Department of Energy.

DUBAI, Emirates is connecting global business and leisure travellers with it’s first-ever passenger service between Dubai and Miami. The airline celebrated the inaugural flight of its four times a week service when it touched down in Miami at 1100hrs local time yesterday.

Emirates flight EK213 was welcomed by Miami International Airport with a water cannon salute, and drew in an audience of passengers, aviation fans and guests. For the first flight, the airline operated its popular Boeing 777 Gamechanger, and on the ground, showcased the interiors of the aircraft to guests, featuring its highly popular First Class private suites. With floor to ceiling sliding doors and sleek design features inspired by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Emirates’ First Class suites on the Gamechanger offer up to 40 square feet of personal space each, and ultra-modern design features.

The airline will subsequently operate its three-class Boeing 777-300ER on the route, featuring eight private suites in First Class, 42 lie flat seats in Business Class and 304 spacious seats in Economy Class for the four times a week service.

Along with Orlando, the new service to Miami provides an additional access point to and from Florida and expands Emirates’ US network to 12 destinations on over 70 weekly flights, providing more choice and convenient connections from the Emirates network to Southern Florida. It also links travellers from Miami, as well as Southern Florida, South America and the Caribbean to over 50 points across the Middle East, West Asia, Africa, Far East and the Indian Ocean Islands via Dubai.

The new service will also add to the existing trade connections provided by Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, which has been operating passenger freighter services to Miami since October 2020. Emirates has been offering cargo capacity into and out of Miami facilitating exports of perishables, electronics and other components as well as e-commerce goods. Emirates SkyCargo has also in the past operated several charter flights on its Boeing 777 full freighter aircraft to transport champion horses from Miami to equestrian events around the world. Since 2019, Emirates SkyCargo has moved more than 7,700 tonnes of cargo in and out of Miami.

With the addition of Miami, Emirates now serves 12 gateways in the US including Boston, Chicago, New York (JFK and Newark), Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington DC and Orlando.
