9 UAE humanitarian organisations join ‘We Stand Together’ nationwide volunteering initiative to support Pakistan

DUBAI, Highlighting the UAE’s collective commitment to supporting the people of Pakistan during the ongoing crisis, more local humanitarian organisations from across the country have joined the “We Stand Together” initiative that aims to pack and deliver thousands of emergency relief kits to women and children affected by the disaster.

Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, The Big Heart Foundation, Dar Al Ber, International Humanitarian City, UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia UAE), Sharjah Charity House, International Charity Organisation and Emirates Charitable Association have joined the volunteering initiative launched by Emirates Red Crescent, Dubai Cares and Sharjah Charity International, in close coordination with the Ministry of Community Development (MoCD) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) in the UAE.

The community volunteering event will take place simultaneously on Saturday, 10th September 2022 at 9:00 am across three locations in the UAE. In Abu Dhabi, it will take place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), Hall 8; in Dubai at Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC),in Expo City Dubai, South Hall; and in Sharjah at Expo Centre Sharjah, Hall 2.

Citizens, expatriates, families, children, seniors and people of determination are encouraged to sign up for the volunteering initiative on volunteers.ae as soon as possible and gather at their preferred venue by 8.00 am before the assembly of the relief kits gets underway. Children will also have the opportunity to write and draw positive messages, which will be placed inside the relief boxes to show solidarity with the people of Pakistan and offer a sense of hope during this time of crisis.

The relief kits will include Food Supplies such as flour, rice, lentils, and oil among other non-perishable items, while the Hygiene Kit will include essential toiletries for women and children such as diapers, sanitary napkins, and soaps to list a few.

Hamoud Abdullah Al Junaibi, Secretary-General of the Emirates Red Crescent, said, “This initiative reflects the solidarity of the UAE leadership and people with those affected by the torrential rains and floods in Pakistan and reinforces its leading role in reducing the humanitarian repercussions of natural disasters on the lives of victims and affected people.”

“There is no doubt that the scale of the disaster that has swept Pakistan is large and caused heavy losses in lives and properties, which is why the UAE has strongly intervened since the beginning of the crisis and its relief teams were among the first to reach the most affected areas despite logistical challenges caused by the disaster on the ground,” he added.

Al Junaibi said that the ERC will spare no effort to enhance the “We Stand Together” initiative and will work in coordination with its partner organisations from the UAE as well as agencies and associations, to unite our efforts, bring the local community to support the people in Pakistan and to show our utmost solidarity with them, so life can return to normal in the affected areas.

Dr. Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of Dubai Cares, said, “With the deteriorating situation in Pakistan, the lives of millions in the country are at stake. Once again, the UAE community is rushing to provide support to communities in emergency situations. Our joint volunteering initiative with other humanitarian organisations, to deliver relief kits, aims to provide yet another opportunity to the entire UAE community to stand in solidarity with the families of those who have lost everything to this natural catastrophe.

“The UAE’s united efforts in supporting Pakistan during this calamity reflects our leadership’s enduring commitment to offering emergency response to communities that urgently need global assistance. We hope for the country to recover from this crisis at the earliest and wish its people safety and wellbeing.”

Abdullah Sultan Bin Khadim, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Charity International, said, “The UAE has always been a pioneer in supporting the affected peoples. With all our hearts and with all means of support, we affirm our stand by Pakistan in its affliction as a result of severe floods that claimed the lives of more than 1,200 people, including more than 400 children, affected more than 33 million people, and caused severe damage to facilities and property.

“We pledged to support the affected peoples in response to the call of humanity and in accordance with the approach of the UAE and its noble principles and values. Sharjah Charity International announced earlier its participation in the initiative to support the victims of torrential rains and floods in Pakistan.”

MoFAIC receives credentials copy of new Ambassador of Austria

ABU DHABI, Abdulla Mohamed Alblooki, Acting Assistant Under-Secretary for Protocol Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, received a copy of the credentials of Etienne Berchtold, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the UAE.

Alblooki wished the new Ambassador of Austria success in the performance of his duties and in enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation between the UAE and his country.

The newly appointed Ambassador expressed his pleasure in representing his country in the United Arab Emirates, which enjoys a prestigious regional and international position under the visionary policy of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Al Jalila Foundation partners with US-based NIH, major UAE universities to establish collaborative scientific research initiative

DUBAI, In a move set to provide a boost to Dubai’s scientific research capabilities, the Al Jalila Foundation, together with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), and three UAE universities, have partnered to launch the UAE-NIH Collaborative Research Initiative (UAE-NIH-CRI).

The UAE universities participating in the collaborative initiative, the first of its kind in the Arab world, include Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Khalifa University, and UAE University.

The UAE-NIH-CRI will support ongoing and new meritorious UAE-US research cooperation. It will foster cooperative research among UAE and US researchers with shared priorities related to infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The initiative will also boost the UAE’s capacity in biomedical research through scientific training opportunities, with the partner organisations contributing combined funding of almost AED14 million over three years.

The UAE-NIH-CRI is expected to fund up to six meritorious awards over three years to support pioneering research collaborations among UAE and US scientists, bringing the brightest minds together.

While announcing the initiative, Dr. Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, said, “Science has no borders and will flourish through global collaboration, knowledge transfer, and continuous innovation. Our vision is to foster world-class medical research to deliver medical breakthroughs. This partnership will further enhance our efforts to advance scientific discovery and be a leader in medical innovation. We are confident that our work together will promote better health outcomes and improve patients’ quality of life.”

Dr. Abdulkareem called on researchers in the UAE and the US to work together to apply for collaborative research funding.

A council representing the five participating organisations will oversee the UAE-NIH-CRI, review the scientific merit of applications, make funding recommendations, and review progress reports. The merit review process will be handled independently by a panel of unconflicted experts.

Canada’s Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security visits Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School

ABU DHABI, Jacqueline O’Neill, Canada’s Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security, today visited the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School on the sidelines of her participation in the International Conference on Women, Peace and Security, which will begin on 8th September, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF).

Canada’s Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security was received by Lt. Colonel Afra Saeed Al Falasi, Commander of Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School. The two sides discussed the UAE’s female empowerment efforts and the role of Emirati women in the fields of defence, security, humanitarian action and peacekeeping missions.

O’Neill was briefed on the training programme for a group of women from Arab countries, Asia and Africa on peacekeeping missions, which is organised under a Memorandum of Understanding between the GWU and UN Women under the patronage of Sheikha Fatima, as well as the efforts of the UN Women Liaison Office in Abu Dhabi to develop the capabilities of Arab women in the military field and peacekeeping missions.

During the visit, the Canadian official was also briefed about the programmes of the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School’s training centre.

O’Neill lauded the UAE’s pioneering experience in establishing the school, which is the first military school for women in the country and the Gulf Cooperation Council region, especially as it has enabled women to become involved in defending their country, giving them equal status to men.

SINF to launch under theme ‘Tales of the Seas’

SHARJAH, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, stated that the 22nd Sharjah International Narrator Forum (SINF) would be launched under the theme “Tales of the Seas”, where several topics about the seas will be presented through stories and novels.

This was stated during a press conference at the Sharjah Aquarium to unveil the details about SINF, which will take place from 21st to 23rd September, 2022.

Dr. Al-Musallam confirmed in exclusive statements to “Sharjah 24” that the 22nd edition would see 160 participants from 44 countries. Forty publications will be presented dealing with in-depth stories on the Gulf, Arab and international seas, with several well-known personalities participating in this edition for the Stories of the Seas. He affirmed that the 22nd edition will receive the family of the late Kuwaiti poet Muhammad Al-Fayez, who will have his valuable memoirs, “Diwan of Bahar” presented in a specialised exhibition at the forum.

Dr. Al-Musallam added that the guest of honour is the artist and composer Ibrahim Jumaa Al-Hajj Al-Madani, the owner of heritage marine melodies. The forum will host many actors from the movie “Bas Ya Bahr” from Kuwait, including Saad Al-Faraj, Hayat Al-Fahd, Muhammad Al-Mansour, and several artists, narrators and storytellers. He affirmed that this edition would witness the participation of a great narrator from Korea and stories from Brazil, Egypt, Morocco and the Gulf countries.
