AND nabs 1,053 drug dealers in May

The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) personnel have apprehended 1,053 people in drug dealing cases in May, removing large quantities of narcotics off the Kingdom’s streets. Media spokesperson for the Public Security Department said that the suspects were referred to the State Security Court’s public prosecutor, adding that officers seized during the raids 349 kg of hashish, about 1.6 million Captagon pills, more than 4 kg of crystal meth, more than 3 kg of marijuana, and a kilo of industrial marijuana, in addition to several firearms. Other achievements in the month of May include holding 513 anti-narcotic lectures, courses and workshops to raise awareness, in partnership with academic and media agencies and relevant partners. In a related context, about 94 people were admitted to drug rehabilitation centers, he added. The media spokesperson stressed that the AND’s anti-drug operations and security campaigns are ongoing across the Kingdom, adding that the law enforcement agency will strike with an iron fist anyone who attempts to use or deal drugs.

ACI-registered exports jump 68pct in 5 months

The exports by firms and industries registered with the Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI) jumped by 68.4 percent in the first five months of 2023. According to data obtained by the Jordan News Agency (Petra), exports increased through certificates of origin issued during the January-May period to some JD571 million, compared to JD338 million for the same period last year. The monthly statistics showed a 14.8-percent rise in the number of issued certificates of origin, topping 12,474 certificates against 10,869 in the first five months of 2022. A total of 2,499 certificates were issued to send goods to Saudi Arabia, followed by 1,678 for the United Arab Emirates, 777 for Iraq, 340 for Egypt, and 9 certificates for Switzerland. Iraq was the leading recipient of exported goods, valued at JD206 million, followed by the UAE at JD112 million. Switzerland received exports worth JD72 million, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia received JD40 million and JD31 million worth of exported goods, respectively. The export of foreign products (re-exports) through ACI reached a total of JD230 million. Meanwhile, Arab product exports amounted to JD55 million, followed by agricultural products at JD53 million and industrial products at JD52 million. The remainder of the exports consisted of various other products.

Student in Irbid suffers snakebite, receives treatment

A student at a private school in the Qumim village in the northern city of Ibrid on Sunday was bitten by a snake, an official said. In a statement, Hamza Najadat, director of an education directorate in Irbid, said that first aid was administered to the student and then he was taken to the Qumim Health Center for treatment, where he was listed in fair condition. “An investigation is underway in the accident” Najadat added, noting that the school has been evacuated to verify that it is free of any snakes. “Contacts were made with the Directorate of Agriculture and the municipality to spray anti-snake pesticides,” he indicated.

Agreement to utilize iris recognition technology in government services

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship has signed a strategic partnership agreement with IrisGuard, an international supplier of end-to-end iris recognition biometric technology, aiming to utilize iris recognition technology in government and private sector services. According to a statement by the ministry on Sunday, this partnership represents a significant leap forward in the services provided to citizens and residents, reinforcing the digital transformation journey, with Jordan recognized as one of the pioneering countries in implementing innovative iris recognition technologies in government services. The services offered by IrisGuard under this partnership include the activation of digital identity cards (SANAD) at all Jordanian post offices and the Kingdom’s embassies abroad. Additionally, the agreement encompasses providing services related to property, real estate, and vehicle ownership through iris recognition technology. The agreement’s implementation is expected to commence in phases in the coming weeks, with future expansions to include additional government sectors, such as the electronic gateway for travelers and healthcare services. Moreover, a package of services will be extended to the private sector and residents of the Kingdom. During the signing ceremony, Minister of Digital Economy Ahmed Hanandeh highlighted the agreement being a crucial step in developing government services in Jordan, advancing the digital sector, and enhancing modern technology as a driver for economic development. “It reflects the comprehensive vision of His Majesty King Abdullah for administrative and economic reforms, and represents a qualitative leap in leveraging advanced iris recognition technologies for the benefit of citizens and residents,” he added. In response, Imad Malhas, the CEO of IrisGuard, expressed eagerness to create a more advanced and efficient environment by relying on digital technology, and contribute to the realization of Jordan’s leading vision in the digital economy.

President Al-Mashat stresses need to take care of disabled and injured

His Excellency Field Marshal Mahdi Al-Mashat, Head of the Supreme Political Council, met today at the Presidential House, Executive Director of the Fund for Care and Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Dr. Ali Nasser Mughali.

During the meeting, President Al-Mashat listened to a brief explanation of the effects of the US-Saudi aggression and forbidden weapons on the increase in the proportion of the disabled in the Republic of Yemen, the increase in the number of brain disabilities and deformities of children during more than eight years of aggression.

President Al-Mashat indicated that the mines left behind by the aggression added a large segment of civilians to the disabled.

He stressed the need to take care of the injured and the disabled in general, especially who were injured on the fronts of pride, the sites of honor and heroism, and who deserve support with blood and not just money.

An agricultural initiative for summer school students in Al-Sabeen District

Students of the Shaheed Al-Qur’an Summer Closed School in Al-Jarda’a neighborhood in Al-Sabeen district in Amanat Al-Asimah implemented an agricultural initiative by planting fruitful, forestry and medicinal trees.

The agricultural initiative, in cooperation with Local Council and the Agriculture and Irrigation Office in the Capital Sana’a, aimed to plant two thousand seedlings of fruit, forest and medicinal trees in the school’s yard, as part of the various activities and programs of the summer courses.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Muhammad Al-Mansour, and the Director of the Agriculture Office in the Municipality, Ibrahim Sharaf, participated in planting a number of agricultural seedlings in the schoolyard.

They emphasized the importance of these activities to consolidate the culture of agriculture among the students of the summer courses, provide them with agricultural knowledge and skills, and raise their awareness of its importance and role in bringing about agricultural development in order to achieve self-sufficiency.

They pointed out the need to activate community initiatives in implementing afforestation campaigns in the districts, the importance of preserving trees and green spaces, expanding the cultivation of fruit trees and encouraging home farming.
