Jordan condemns deadly attack on Uganda school

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Saturday condemned an armed attack on a school in Mpondwe in western Uganda on Friday evening, which left dozens of people dead or injured. The Ministry reaffirmed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the government and people of Uganda and reiterated its condemnation and rejection of all forms of violence, expressing condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and wishing the injured speedy recovery.

National cybersecurity plan to protect public, private sector data

National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC) Bassam Maharmeh said Saturday his institution has put forward a draft national cybersecurity framework, a program to protect information systems of the public and private sectors. The draft is a set of procedures, controls, mechanisms and standards that institutions must adopt and apply to enhance the security of the Kingdom’s cyber systems and move into a higher level in information protection, he said in an interview with Petra, noting that most institutions do not apply certain cybersecurity standards. The standards that will be incorporated into the national cybersecurity framework will be mandatory with a grace period at the start, he said, expressing hope that the center will receive feedback and respond in order to proceed with approval procedures according to the rules, as each institution will adopt controls pending the type of threat it faces. Maharmeh said the NCSC last year dealt with 1,362 incidents involving government institutions and private companies, 26 percent of which were high-risk and serious. The health sector was most targeted in 2022 accounting for 9 percent of the total cyber attacks, followed by the commercial sector, including medium and small businesses that lacked the resources to protect their data, in addition to other key government institutions that were constantly being hacked, according to NCSC statistics. Maharmeh said each country is targeted according to its geographical and political status, adding that the center is a national institution that deals with attacks and threats to institutions that may threaten national security or basic services in the country. The center, he added, detects and warns against threats and breaches, helps those exposed to recover and raises awareness among the public on the need to protect their data. He said the cybersecurity center has a key role in drafting legislation, controls and regulatory frameworks to protect against cyber attacks, pointing to two types of threats: organized cybercrime that targets government entities, companies, universities, hospitals and other institutions with the aim of stealing data for profit, and state-sponsored groups that mainly target government institutions for espionage, theft or gathering information.

Orange Jordan holds 1st data science career fair

Orange Jordan on Saturday held the first career fair for graduates of the Data Science Academy, which is being implemented in partnership with Optimiza, with the support of the European Union. The job fair was organized under the auspices of Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Ahmad Hanandeh within the framework of the Innovation Space project, a three-year program being implemented with the support of the EU through the Innovation Program for Enterprise Growth and Job Opportunities “Ibtikar Jordan” for digital empowerment and promoting a culture of innovation at scale, Orange Jordan said in a statement. The fair, it said, provided a link for the academy’s graduates of its first and second batches, to connect directly with companies, with the participation of more than 25 companies from the Information Technology and financial sectors, representatives of Orange Jordan, as well as Optimiza, a regional systems integration and digital transformation solutions provider, Orange’s partner in the Data Science Academy’s training program. The career expo is an extension of the academy’s vision, which aims to bridge the gap between academic education and the labor market through training qualified data experts in extracting and analyzing big data, algorithms and related systems, as well as key artificial intelligence skills in light of the needs of local and global market, which are witnessing a boom in data volume and a growing need for competencies in data-driven fields, it said. The academy provides intensive training for graduates of the faculties of science, computer and engineering, while ensuring access to the largest possible number of participants as it offers its program via the Internet, said the statement. The Data Science Academy is one of Orange’s free programs that continues to develop young people’s skills in the required digital fields to enhance their career and entrepreneurial opportunities. These programs contributed to the empowerment of more than 500 young men and women in various governorates of the Kingdom, it added. “We were keen to organize the first data science career fair as an opportunity for students and institutions to communicate effectively with each other to facilitate the recruitment process in line with the Data Science Academy’s goal of qualifying specialized experts to meet the needs of the local and regional labor market,” Orange Jordan stated.

Ambassador: UAE, Jordan have common vision toward economic integration

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to Jordan Sheikh Khalifa bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan said Saturday his country and Jordan shared a common vision towards future economic and investment integration. The remarks of the ambassador, who is honorary president of the Jordanian-Emirati Businessmen Council, came during a ceremony in Abu Dhabi to celebrate the 77th anniversary of Jordan’s independence and the marriage of HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, the Senate said in a statement. During the ceremony, which was patronized by Senate President Faisal Fayez and attended by a number of Jordanian and Emirati investors in the UAE, the ambassador spoke of the deep UAE-Jordanian relations in various fields and the two countries’ keen interest in further cementing and building on them to serve common interests and enhance cooperation. During the ceremony, Fayez honored a number of Emirati and Jordanian businessmen and investors, as well as a number of officials and diplomats in the UAE, “who constituted a key turning point in the course of relations between the two brotherly countries”. In a press statements, Fayez commended the high level of Jordanian-Emarati relations and thanked the UAE for the care and attention it offers to Jordanians residing in the Arab Gulf country.
