Saudi School Team Participates in Rio de Janeiro Olympics for Athletics

The Saudi School Athletics Team is participating in the U-15 Gymnasiade, which began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 19 until August 27.

The President of the Saudi Federation for School Sports, Ali Al-Shuailan, said that the Saudi Team, which includes male and female athletes, was prepared to participate in this competition in Brazil and to represent Saudi schools in the best way, adding that the participation of female athletes in the School Olympics is the first in the history of the Kingdom.

He thanked the Minister of Education, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Federation for School Sports, Youssef Al-Benyan, for his support of school sports.

Jawaher Al Qasimi: Female athletes excel when backed with funding, support

SHARJAH, 21st August, 2023 (WAM) — Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohamed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairperson of Sharjah Women’s Sports, has underscored that the achievements of Emirati women across local and global sporting arenas during 2022-23 reflects the dedication of athletes when backed by a clear vision and a winning strategy. The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club’s 2022-23 season culminated in winning 335 medals in individual and team sports locally and internationally. Commenting on these achievements, Her Highness said, “Women’s Sports have achieved a significant leap in Sharjah, where clubs promote a vibrant culture and sports institutional regulations guide activities of clubs to bring out the fullest potential of sportswomen. Such achievements can only happen when backed by proper funding and strategies for building successive generations of high-performing athletes.” Her Highness further noted: “We have witnessed an unprecedented season with our champions bringing 335 medals home. What we have achieved so far in UAE women’s sports is just one milestone in an ongoing journey, which we in Sharjah are focusing in the women’s sports sector. We encourage more support and sponsorship from local institutions and expect more engagement from society. We envision Arab female athletes qualifying in all international sports arenas.” Sharjah Women’s Sports Club’s players concluded their season with an outstanding 335 medals, won across 70 championships including 51 local and 19 international competitions. The accolades earned include 166 gold medals, 89 silver, and 84 bronze in eight individual and team competitions, with 32 in fencing, archery and shooting; 21 in karate; 6 in basketball and 2 medals each in volleyball and table tennis. The remarkable achievements of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club during the 2022-2023 sports season included Fatima Al Hosani’s athletics bronze medal at the Arab Games in Algeria; Amna Al-Awadhi best national team score in archery at the Youth World Cup in Ireland. And Yasmin Tahlak broke the record in the 10-metre air rifle game during the Arab Championship in Egypt and snatched third place. This success would not have been achieved without the intensive preparation and comprehensive strategies developed by each game’s technical, administrative, and medical teams. The club’s management has developed clear plans to advance sports skills and prepare players to participate in championships. One of these plans was to provide individual and group camps for all teams: 19 camps locally and 7 internationally. Sharjah Women’s Sports Club’s dedication to create Olympians has spared no expense in equipping all its facilities, preparing athletes to qualify for, as well as training for supporting staff in the sports field. One of the most prominent initiatives collaboratively launched by Sharjah Women’s Sports and Sharjah Women’s Sports Club was ‘Media Appearance Training Workshop for Sports Teams’, in partnership with Sharjah Media City (Shams). The workshop introduced players to the basics of media appearance and the skills they would need to lead impactful media engagements, locally and internationally. The two entities also have jointly formed a new department dedicated to health care and sports nutrition in keeping with global best practices. The department at Sharjah Women’s Sports Club features four sub-specialities: sports medicine, nutrition, physiotherapy and mental preparation and psychological follow-up, led by specialists and experts in the relevant fields to offer the club’s players holistic training and development necessary for succeeding on the highly competitive global stage.

World Athletics Championships 2023: Mutaz Barshim Qualifies for High Jump Final

World and Olympic high jump champion Mutaz Barshim qualified for the high jump competition on Sunday in the 19th edition of World Athletics Championships 2023, currently being held in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.

He succeeded in jumping to a height of 2.28m in the semi-finals of the competition, which brought the world’s best contenders in the high jump together. He will compete in the final to maintain the title next Tuesday and is determined to win the fourth gold medal globally.

Barshim won the gold medal globally in the editions of IAAF London 2017, IAAF Doha 2019, and 2022 Eugene as the first champion in the history of athletics to win the title three times.

He could break the record in the high jump of 2.45m registered under the Cuban world record holder Javier Sotomayor, as Barshim reached 2.43m, the second-highest jump in Brussels in 2014.

Qatar Beach Volleyball Team Ends Participation in Elite16 – Hamburg

The Qatari men’s beach volleyball team of duo Cherif Younousse and Ahmad Tijan finished their participation in the Elite16 – Hamburg- 2023 Beach Volleyball Tournament which ends on Monday.

The Qatari duo played their last match in the tournament against the Brazilian duo Andre Stein and George Wanderley who won the match with two clean sets, 21-18 and 21-16.

The Qatari team is currently ranked in the 3rd place in world ranking after collecting 6580 points in 11 world tournaments.

Qatar, winners of the bronze medal in the men’s beach volleyball in Tokyo Olympics 2020, had many distinguished results in recent years, led by duo Cherif Younousse and Ahmad Tijan who presented dazzling levels and placed the national team among the first teams in the world rankings.

For his part, the President of Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) and the West Asian Volleyball Association (WAVA), Ali Ghanem Al Kuwari participated in the third meeting of the heads of regional federations held by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) via visual communication technology.

Al Kuwari presented In his speech during the meeting the latest developments in the WAVA.

The meeting discussed updates on the volleyball calendar during the period from 2025 to 2028, the FIVB referees’ courses, decisions taken during the FIVB Board of Directors and many other topics.

Expo Stars League: Al Wakrah Top Table on Goal Difference

The 2023-2024 Expo Stars League’s Week 1 action, held on August 16, 17 and 18, 2023, witnessed four wins and two draws as all teams geared up for an exciting season ahead.

A total of 21 goals were scored during the six matches, with an average of 3.5 goals per match. The biggest victory this week was achieved by Al Wakrah over Muaither, while the Qatar SC vs Al Gharafa match witnessed the largest number of goals. Al Wakrah and Al Rayyan emerged with clean sheets, the QSL website reported.

Al Wakrah made a great start by scoring three goals without any response from Muaither to secure all three points. On the other hand, Muaither performed well and the team had a great appearance despite the defeat.

Al Wakrah scored two goals within two minutes just before the end of first half, as Mohamed Benyettou opened the scoring in the 45th minute and in stoppage time of the first half, Ayoub Assal added the second.

In the second half, Ayoub Assal added his second goal and the third for Al Wakrah from a mistake by goalkeeper Ivanildo Rodrigues.

Meanwhile, Al Arabi and Al Shamal teams tied with a goal each. Al Shamal had much of the advantage at the beginning of first half and they were closest to opening the scoring as they piled pressure on Al Arabi with relentless attempts at goal.

Al Arabi turned on the offensive and their attacks yielded the desired result in the 29th minute when Matias Nani deflected the ball into his own net while trying to negotiate action following a corner kick to end the first half with The Dream Team advancing with a goal.

Al Shamal succeeded in translating their advantage to score the equalizer through Jordanian Ali Olwan after a mistake by defender Jassem Jaber in the 90+2 minute, so the match ended with a goal for each of them.

Moreover, Al Gharafa tied Qatar SC with four goals each in an exciting match that witnessed the brilliance of Qatar SC’s Brazilian striker Bruno Tabata, who scored a hat-trick.

Qatar SC opened the scoring in the sixth minute with Tabata’s goal and the same player doubled the lead in the 20th minute. Yohan Boli reduced the score for Al Gharafa in the 35th minute before Ahmed Al Janehi equalized deep into injury time of the first half.

In the 58th minute and, in a wonderful way, Tabata completed his hat-trick and gave his team the lead before Al Janehi grabbed his brace and the third for his team to equalize in the 77th minute.

In stoppage time, Algerian Yacine Brahimi gave Al Gharafa the lead in a distinctive way and, in the last seconds of the match, the excitement continued until Ben Malango managed to save his team from losing and score the fourth goal. (MORE)

Expo Stars League: Al Wakrah Top Table on Goal Difference -1-

Al Rayyan achieved a difficult victory with a lone goal against Al Markhiya. The match was fast, open and exciting, and the teams displayed great football in terms of speed and tactics.

The game witnessed the remarkable brilliance of Al Rayyan goalkeeper Fahd Younes, who prevented four clear chances for Al Markhiya.

Al Rayyan’s Roger Guedes scored the only goal of the match in the 30th minute.

Furthermore, Al Duhail started their title defence with a difficult victory over Al Ahli, winning by two goals to one.

The first half began with the two teams giving a good account of themselves as each side tried to control the midfield and take possession of the ball. After several attempts, Kenyan striker Michael Olunga managed to open the scoring following a cross from Almoez Ali in the 23rd minute.

In the second half, Al Duhail continued on the offensive and they doubled their lead in the 48th minute through new signing Ibrahim Diallo.

Eslam Yassein scored Al Ahli’s only goal in the 54th minute. He was assisted by Yazan Al Naimat.

Also, Al Sadd achieved a 3-1 victory over Umm Salal at the end of first round of competition.

Al Sadd scored an early goal after less than five minutes, which was the fastest goal in the first round, through their star Akram Afif. Brazilian Guillerme Torres scored the second goal in the 26th minute from a pass by new Ecuadorian winger Gonzaloa Plata.

Three minutes into the second half, Yusuf Abdurisag scored the third goal for Al Sadd.

Umm Salal scored their only goal in the 86th minute five minutes before the end of the match through Algerian professional Andy Delort.

Qatar SC’s Brazilian striker Bruno Tabata emerged as the top scorer at the end of first round of Expo Stars League with three goals. Al Gharafa’s Ahmed Al Janehi and Al Wakrah’s Ayoub Assal have two goals each.
