Dubai Police Officer obtains Professorship in Criminology

The Director of the International Centre for Forensic Sciences (ICFS) at Dubai Police has recently obtained a professorship from the Murdoch University, Australia, in recognition for his continuous endeavours and contributions to the academic field of criminology.

Over the past seven years, Lieutenant Colonel Dr Rashid Alghafri, Director of the ICFS and Chairman of the Dubai Police Scientist Council, has been teaching postgraduate students as an assistant professor at the Department of Biology at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). He was also recognised as an associate professor at the Bond University, Australia, for his invaluable published studies, research, and supervision of postgraduate students.

Lt. Col Alghafri has published 45 research papers in leading scientific journals and supervised four PhD students and seven MA students from different universities in and outside the country. As an active Forensic Investigator and Researcher specialising in Forensic Genetics, Lt. Col Alghafri has received 15 awards. He has been invited as a key spokesman in various international, regional and local conferences and forums held in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

The Director of the ICFS secured two intellectual properties, one in 2014 and another in 2022, for the male genetic fingerprint, the first of its kind in the world, from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The new genetic fingerprint is considered the most powerful in the world and was featured in a scientific journal and was requested for solving crimes by many policing agencies worldwide.

Upon his recent recognition, Lt. Col Alghafri becomes the first police officer in the UAE to receive a professorship in criminology. He has extended his appreciation to the Dubai Police for its keenness to qualify cadres and allowing them to excel academically and practically.

Meanwhile, Mr James Trotter, Dean and Academic President of the Murdoch University, praised Lt. Col Alghafri’s exertion over the years, pointing out the Force’s undeniable efforts to support and sponsor talents and competencies in all scopes to achieve excellence and pioneering in all the policing fields.
