G20 Nations Responsible for 80 Percent of Planet-Heating Emissions, Says UN Official

Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Simon Stiell on Wednesday warned against the decline of politicians’ interest in the global warming phenomenon.

Addressing an event at the London-based Chatham House, Stiell announced that G20 nations were responsible for 80 percent of planet-heating emissions and must be at the core of the solution”, adding that the world needed torrents of cash to fund the clean energy transition but who pays what has long been a sticking point at the UN’s annual climate negotiations.

He stressed that the next two years are essential to save the planet and there is still a chance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through new national climate plans, but the most powerful plans are needed now, he underlined.

Scientists confirm that reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions to half by 2030 is extremely important to stop temperatures rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius, which may lead to exacerbation of extreme weather phenomena.
