DUBAI: Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), said that the World Governments Summit (WGS) brings together under its umbrella a group of government leaders, ministers, senior officials and decision-makers from different countries around the world, to exchange experiences, knowledge and ideas that contribute to promoting development and prosperity around the world.

Chungong told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the second day of the World Governments Summit 2024 in Dubai that the world is currently suffering from many challenges, including the effects of climate change, artificial intelligence and geopolitical tensions, adding that ‘this summit contributes to mobilising forces and unifying efforts to find ways to address these global challenges.’

He said, “I believe that the World Governments Summit is looking at the challenges we face with a focus on key issues such as climate change and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

He state
d that the World Governments Summit witnesses a diversity of issues and topics raised for discussion, in addition to the diversity of participants, which contributes to making its outputs more logical and implementable on the ground. He added, “I believe that the results of this summit will contribute to strengthening the global agenda and improving governance.”

He added, “It is not surprising that the UAE is organising the World Governments Summit in this ideal way. I believe that the topics and issues of the summit are very important for us and for everyone.”

In response to a question about the relations between the UAE and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Secretary-General said, “We have very good relations with the UAE, and the
Federal National Council is a very strong and active member of the Union. The Council is the first parliament in the world to sign a cooperation agreement with the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 2014.”

Chungong stressed the growing role of the UAE Federal National Council in the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in presenting proposals, initiatives and ideas that address various issues, which are highly appreciated by the representatives of the member states of the Union, which contributes to strengthening the position of the UAE as a leading and pioneering country in serving humanity as a whole.
