Xi Jinping Takes Inspiration from Classic Text in Call for Greater Harmony between Humans, Nature

BEIJING, May 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A report from CCTV+:

Chinese President Xi Jinping has on many occasions stressed the need for greater efforts to protect the ecological environment, with Xi taking his inspiration from classic works and looking to promote the shift towards a greener, low-carbon lifestyle to ensure harmony between humans and nature.

Xi quoted from the ancient Chinese classical text ‘Zi Zhi Tong Jian’, or ‘Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance’, first published almost a millennium ago, in a speech delivered at the opening of the Beijing Horticultural Expo back in April 2019.

During this speech, Xi acknowledged that: “industrialization, while generating unprecedented material wealth, has incurred serious damage to Mother Nature.”

These remarks came against the backdrop of growing concern over the effects of climate change, as well as worries that fossil fuels could soon run out if humans continue to burn at the current rate, while key resources such as land, water and energy are all becoming more limited.

“‘Well-measured use of natural resources’ is the key to ecological conservation,” Xi told the expo.

“We need to promote a simpler, greener, and low-carbon lifestyle, oppose excessiveness and wastefulness, and foster a culture of living green and healthy,” the president said.

“Looking up at night, we are awed by the many stars in the sky. Planet Earth is the only home for mankind. We must protect this planet like our own eyes, and cherish nature the way we cherish life,” Xi said.

China’s latest five-year plan also paves the way for its promise of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) vows to lower energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) and carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 13.5 percent and 18 percent, respectively, during the next five-year period.

In the past 10 years, China has ranked first globally in terms of the increase in forest resources, with its afforestation area exceeding 70 million hectares. Meanwhile, 90 percent of terrestrial ecosystem types and 85 percent of key wild animal populations are under effective state protection. China has also pledged to increase the forest stock volume by six billion cubic meters by 2030 from the 2005 level and bring its total installed capacity of wind and solar power to over 1.2 billion kilowatts.

CGTN: How does Xi Jinping express gratitude and love to his mother?

BEIJING, May 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As International Mother’s Day, an important occasion that falls on the second Sunday of May every year, will be celebrated on May 9 this year, the media started reporting moving stories about mothers and children.

Among the stories, Xi Jinping’s stands out as he is not only a son but also the president of China.

How does the president express gratitude and love to his mother? Xi’s way can be figured out when he stressed the importance of family bonds and family love and emphasized family education on many occasions.

Xi Jinping and his mother Qi Xin

Pass down family tradition

When President Xi delivered his first New Year address in 2013, photos placed on his bookshelves caught the online community’s attention, especially the image of him walking hand in hand with his mother.

Xi is a filial son. He chats with his mother Qi Xin, and takes a walk with her whenever he has time.

While meeting with representatives to the first National Conference of Model Families in December 2016, Xi told a story about family education. The conference was the first of its kind to honor model families selected nationwide. A total of 300 model families were honored.

“When I was a child, my mother gave me a picture-story book series-’The Legend of Yue Fei.’ One of its more than 10 volumes shows Yue Fei’s mother tattooing four characters saying ‘serve the country with the utmost loyalty’ across his back,” Xi said, adding that the story of Yue Fei, a well-known ancient military figure fighting against invasion, deeply impressed him.

Self-discipline

Qi led a simple life, which became a tradition for the family. No matter how painstaking to take care of the family while working, she never compromised her work. Her lifestyle and the family atmosphere guided Xi’s values.

“A person who failed to be incorruptible and self-disciplined will become a person with no guts. Keep in mind that honesty is a blessing and greed is a curse while establishing a correct view of power, status, and interests,” Qi once wrote in a letter to Xi, reminding him of self-discipline. Xi has incorporated these beliefs into his ideology and governance practices.

Calling corruption the “biggest” risk to the Party’s governance, Xi has stressed there is “no alternative” but to fight corruption against all odds and called for rigorous self-discipline within the Party.

While going after corrupt officials, including both high-ranking “tigers” to lower-level “flies” on the domestic front, Beijing has also carried out such operations as “Sky Net” and “Fox Hunt” to hunt down venal officials who have fled abroad.

Taqdeer Award to launch Excellence Cards for labour sector on 17th May

DUBAI, Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, organisers of the Taqdeer Award announced that it will be launching and activating the Excellence Cards for the labour sector, a new initiative that forms part of the emirate’s efforts to enhance the welfare of workers and raise benchmarks in labour practices.

The announcement, set to be made at a gala award ceremony to be held on 17th May at the Rashid Hall of the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), seeks to recognise the contributions of companies who received 4- and 5-star ratings in the Taqdeer Award’s fourth edition last year, as well as their workers.

The Excellence Cards project offers more than 35 incentives extended by four government agencies, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Municipality and General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai), to support and encourage the companies that received the high Taqdeer Award ratings to continue their journey of excellence in caring for their workers.

The project also features a wide range of incentives and discounts extended by private institutions for the workers of these companies.

Major General Obaid Muhair bin Surour, Chairman of Taqdeer Award, Chairman of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs (PCLA) in Dubai and Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai), said the Excellence Cards is a pioneering project that aims to enhance efforts to establish sustainable policies and standards in labour care and ensure that company owners and workers maintain their responsibilities and obligations towards each other. The initiative is a token of appreciation for the excellence shown by companies and workers in meeting high labour practice standards.

In its initial phase, the Excellence Cards will be given to 15 major national and international companies that won 4- and 5-star ratings in the fourth edition of the Taqdeer Award in 2020 as well as the 50,000 workers of these companies.

He said: “The project is the result of the tireless efforts and our constructive discussions with the supporting government agencies. This initiative has become a reality thanks to the exceptional incentives they have offered, which stems from their commitment to promote a culture of excellence in labour welfare and their keenness to enhance Dubai’s and the UAE’s benchmarks and global reputation in worker welfare practices.”

The Chairman expressed his deep appreciation for the government’s support which will contribute to motivating thousands of companies in the emirate’s free zones and its construction, professional services and manufacturing sectors to participate in the upcoming editions of the Award. It will also inspire them to accelerate the realisation of the vision to create an exceptional labour environment in which companies and workers not only honour their duties towards each other but also contribute in unison to the national economy.

The Excellence Cards project features 35 sets of incentives for companies and workers, most notably, discounts ranging from 25 to 50 per cent on fees for the submission of tender documents to several government bodies, additional points for the engineering excellence initiative within the technical evaluation process for contractors and consultants in Dubai Municipality projects under the specific criteria of the Building Permits Department, waiver of renewal fees for professional competence certificates for engineers for a renewable period of a year.

Other incentives include membership in GDRFA–Dubai’s Innovation and Creativity Center that will allow the workers and companies to take advantage of its services; special facilities for registering intellectual property; free virtual training courses at DEWA Academy; free NoL cards for workers; and opportunities for companies to place an advertisement on Dubai Metro Station display boards.

Major General Obaid bin Surour said the project features two types of cards. The first is a Gold Card that will be awarded to companies with 4- and 5-star ratings to obtain the incentives provided by government departments, while the second is a Blue Card that will enable eligible workers to obtain special discounts from malls and commercial establishments located near their labour accommodations.

Bin Surour said the total value of discounts provided by malls, commercial establishments and national and international private companies amounts to millions of dirhams.

The Taqdeer Award is supported by RTA, DEWA, Dubai Municipality, GDRFA-Dubai, wasl Asset Management Group and Dubai TV as Strategic Partners, along with NIA, the Platinium Sponsor, flydubai and emaratech, the Gold Sponsors, and Emirates NBD, ENOC and Al Fardan Exchange, the Silver Sponsors.

Major Khaled Ismail, Secretary-General of the Award, said: “As the award is organised once every two years, the advantages of the Excellence Cards will continue throughout these two years. The benefits and discounts are then given to new winners in the next editions of the award.”

The winning companies can register on the Award’s website to obtain government incentives, while the award team will coordinate with government agencies and private institutions to ensure eligible workers can take advantage of the incentives. The award team will hold a workshop to brief the winning companies and workers on how they can take advantage of the Excellence Card.

The gala ceremony for announcing the beneficiaries of the initiative will be attended by prominent leaders from government departments, senior officials, representatives of regional and international organisations, professionals from different departments in government and private sectors, members of diplomatic corps and the media.

The event, organised by the IPR Department, aims at encouraging creativity and appreciating genuineness.

100 Million Meals campaign concludes with a whopping 216 million meals

DUBAI, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, announced that the UAE’s Ramadan campaign has secured 216 million meals, more than double its target, for vulnerable groups in 30 countries across four continents.

‘100 Million Meals’ campaign, the region’s biggest food distribution drive, concluded on Saturday after drawing massive donations from 385,000 individuals, companies, businessmen and philanthropists across 51 countries through various donation channels and two charity auctions.

Funds raised will help distribute food parcels, equivalent to 216 million meals, to people in need across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.

Low-income families, orphans, widows and parents of refugee children in several countries have already started preparing their own nutritious meals during the holy month of Ramadan as distribution of food parcels began in cooperation with local and international partners.

Distribution of food parcels, carrying essential easy-to-store food items, will continue over the next three months to reach beneficiaries in the 30 targeted countries. Every AED1 donated helped provide one meal in beneficiary countries.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said the overwhelming community engagement and record turnout of individuals and companies who donated to the campaign confirms, once again, that the UAE will always remain a global capital of philanthropy.

“The record donations and support to ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign is a testament that strategic and sustainable humanitarian work has become an established culture in the UAE.”

He added, “the objectives of ‘100 Million Meals’ were ambitious to match the magnitude of hardship that COVID-19 has brought to vulnerable populations across the world.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum concluded, “the campaign’s biggest success is proving that humanitarian work in the UAE has no limit.”

The campaign’s organiser Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) is teaming up with 12 food banks and nine humanitarian and charitable organisations to deliver food aid to the doorstep of underserved homes in targeted countries.

The campaign, which ran for 28 days, brought together all segments of the society from the art community and car enthusiasts to prominent businessmen, government and private entities, and members of the public from inside and outside the UAE.

Website and SMS donations secured 20 million meals, while contributions of the private sector alone helped provide 70 million meals.

Massive donations continued to pour in even after the campaign achieved its 100 million meals target within the first 10 days of its launch.

The Ramadan campaign was launched to create a food safety net for disadvantaged communities and provide a chance of a dignified life, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated unemployment and poverty in developing nations. The campaign is part of UAE’s contribution to global efforts to combat world hunger and malnutrition.

Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Secretary-General of MBRGI, said the overwhelming success of the ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign reflects the deep connection of the UAE community and institutions with the humanitarian and relief initiatives launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

“In the UAE, there is an innate desire to help people in need,” Al Gergawi said. “It was clear to see, from the number and range of donors, that the entire UAE community is galvanised by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s forward-looking vision to institutionalize humanitarian work across the nation.”

Praising the combined efforts of charitable and humanitarian organisations, Al Gergawi said, “the harmonious teamwork between all partners – from international stakeholders to local entities and individuals – was key to exceeding the campaign’s goals.”

He noted that the collective donations from individuals and companies, besides the distribution carried out by partnering entities, has helped provide a food safety net to disadvantaged communities across four continents.

“Thanks to the deeply embedded sense of empathy and charity that runs rich among the UAE’s citizens and residents, our country’s work to eradicate malnutrition and hunger across the world will only continue to accelerate.”

Al Gergawi added that the widespread and swift response to the campaign reflects the UAE’s core values of solidarity with people around the world, cementing the status of humanitarian work as part of the lifestyle of citizens and residents.

Held in parallel to the influx of donations pouring into the campaign’s channels, the exclusive international Charity Art Auction gave philanthropists and art enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own rare artworks by world-renowned artists and items from the personal collections of world leaders, while contributing to providing food aid to vulnerable groups in 30 countries.

Headlining the auction, organised by MBRGI in collaboration with Maupy Auction, was a piece of Kaaba cover, embroidered in gold and silver, donated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and drawings by the late South African President Nelson Mandela, alongside valuable masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse and Joan Miro.

A week later, the ‘Most Noble Numbers’ charity auction achieved a world record by selling the prestigious single-digit car plate, AA9, for AED38 million to become the world’s second most expensive number plate.

The auction, held in collaboration with Emirates Auction, Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai (RTA) and Etisalat, raised donations for the ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign by selling off three double-digit plate numbers U31, T38 and E51 and five exclusive Etisalat mobile numbers from Etisalat: 0569999999, 0569999993, 0549999993, 0565555556 and 0545555558.

Led by MBRGI, easy-to-store parcels are delivered to the doorstep of people in need through a collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, the Food Banking Regional Network, and local charitable organizations in the 30 beneficiary countries.

The WFP will help distribute 20 percent of the campaign’s food parcels in Palestine and refugee camps in Jordan and Bangladesh, while the Food Banking Regional Network is securing food parcels to target groups in 13 of the targeted 30 countries.

Food aid will reach beneficiaries in countries including Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Tunisia, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Angola, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Senegal, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Burundi, Benin, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kosovo, and Nepal.

Dr. Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al-Haddad, Grand Mufti and Director of the Ifta Department of the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai (IACAD), issued a fatwa permitting the payment of cash forms of zakat to purchase food parcels for the ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign.

Media coverage of the ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign reached 136.1 million views, while the campaign’s videos garnered 350 million views. More than 4,000 news articles and features in local, regional and international media outlets highlighted the incoming donations from different parts of the society and detailed food distribution operations in several countries.

The MBRGI, organiser of the ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign, was established in 2015, combining under its umbrella over 30 humanitarian and developmental initiatives and entities.

The ‘100 Million Meals’ campaign is the latest addition to the foundation’s humanitarian, social and development initiatives that are primarily devoted to supporting and empowering vulnerable and disadvantaged communities around the world, regardless of race, religion, or geographical region.

It falls under MBRGI’s Humanitarian Aid and Relief, one of the five pillars of the foundation’s operations that cover Healthcare and Disease Control, Spreading Education and Knowledge, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Empowering Communities.

The campaign is an expansion of the locally-held ‘10 Million Meals’ campaign that was launched in Ramadan 2020 to provide food support to empower COVID-19-hit groups across the UAE.
