EWEC invites EOI submissions for development of battery energy storage system

ABU DHABI: The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) today invited developers and developer consortiums to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development of an independent greenfield 400-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) power project.

EWEC will deploy BESS to provide additional flexibility to the system and ancillary services such as frequency response and voltage regulation. BESS technology will play a crucial role in EWEC’s strategic plan to diversify its portfolio of energy projects with a focus on sustainability, in addition to increasing its total solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation capacity to 7.5 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. By implementing these critical strategic renewable energy projects, EWEC expects to reduce its average carbon dioxide intensity from power generation by approximately 42 per cent, from 330 kilogrammes per megawatt hour (kg/MWh) in 2019 to an estimated 190kg/MWh by 2030.

Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said, ‘This project is a key p
art of our strategy to achieve the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 and supports the UAE’s wider sustainability and decarbonisation objectives. Importantly, it also actively enhances the reliability of the nation’s energy infrastructure. Compared to traditional grid storage solutions, BESS offers unmatched advantages, including increased flexibility, scalability, cost-effectiveness, and improved efficiency. EWEC continues to see BESS as a critical investment to manage system operability when large amounts of renewables are synchronised to the power system. We look forward to receiving EOI submissions from developers and developer consortiums to partner with us in accelerating the UAE’s energy transition.’

The project will closely follow the model of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s successful independent power project programme, where developers enter into a long-term agreement with EWEC as the sole procurer. The project will involve the development, financing, construction, oper
ation, maintenance and ownership of the BESS system and associated infrastructure.

EWEC invites developers or developer consortiums to submit an EOI by the deadline of 22 March 2024, at 12:00 noon Gulf Standard Time (GST), for the first stage of the tender process. Interested parties are requested to submit their EOI via electronic copy to: ewec.bess@ewec.ae.

Following a review of the EOIs, EWEC will issue the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to parties interested in proceeding to the next stage. The RFQ will provide additional details regarding the project, pre-qualification criteria and the bidding process.

China’s photovoltaic industry maintains global leadership

BEIJING: China’s photovoltaic (PV) industry continues to lead globally in market size, technology, production, manufacturing and industrial chain completeness, according to Liu Yiyang, Deputy Secretary General of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA).

In an exclusive interview with China Economic Net, Liu expressed confidence that the recent month-on-month decline in PV product exports is a temporary fluctuation rather than a long-term trend. He expects exports to resume an upward growth trajectory.

“China’s photovoltaic industry absolutely ranks first in the world not only in terms of market size, technology level, production and manufacturing capabilities, but also in the completeness of its industrial chain,” Liu stated. “I’m firmly convinced that the month-on-month decline in PV product exports will not be a long-term trend, but rather a volatile upward growth pattern.”

The 2024 Government Work Report highlighted that China’s renewable energy power generation installed capacity has histori
cally surpassed thermal power for the first time, accounting for more than half of the world’s new installed capacity throughout the year.

Looking ahead, Liu indicated a global consensus that by 2030, new energy installed capacity, including photovoltaics, will triple from current levels. “2030 is not far away, which means global demand for PV will continue to rise rapidly,” he noted.

Senate Speaker meets Speakers of House of Lords, Commons

Amman: Senate Speaker, Faisal Al-Fayez, met separately with the Speakers of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, and the House of Lords, John McFall, in the British capital, London.

Al-Fayez called for the international community to join forces with the Palestinian state to end Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and for the recognition of the independent Palestinian state during the talks, which were attended by members of several parliamentary committees in the United Kingdom’s House of Lords.

“Political and security conflicts are occurring in our region; the most recent one involved Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, resulting in tens of thousands of martyrs and wounded, the majority of them were women and children,” he said. It was part of a larger, discriminatory campaign to forcibly uproot Palestinians and demolish their houses and infrastructure.

During the discussions, attended by Senators Alia Bouran, Nasser Judeh, and Mazen Darwazeh an
d Jordanian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Manar Al-Dabbas, Al-Fayez emphasized Jordan’s steadfast rejection of the forcible displacement of Palestinians, saying, “Jordan clearly rejects forced displacement, as it is a violation of international law.” “It is a war crime and paves the way for further conflict.”

In order to reach a political solution that will put an end to the cycle of violence and allow the Palestinian issue to be resolved in accordance with the two-state solution which is the only way that allows everyone to live in peace Al-Fayez presented His Majesty King Abdullah II’s efforts to bring security and peace to the region, Pointing out that creating an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital is the only way to provide security and stability for Israel and other countries.

Al-Fayez, according to a statement issued by the Senate, said that Jordan is a strong nation politically and in terms of security today, but it also faces economic difficulties as a result of the
surrounding conflicts, Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, and the one million to three hundred thousand Syrian refugees who are currently living in Jordan due to the Syrian crisis. Jordan’s efforts to provide these refugees with care and a decent standard of living have made Jordan’s economic difficulties worse.

He emphasized the need for greater economic collaboration, more joint investments between the two kingdoms, and the signing of additional cooperation agreements. He also mentioned how crucial it is that the UK make it easier for Jordanian industrial and agricultural products to reach British consumers.

The British side reaffirmed its delight in the strategic and historical alliance that unites the two countries as they approach their second centennial. This alliance is built on a rich history of beneficial coordination and cooperation.

The British side applauded the diplomatic efforts of Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, who stands for reason and wisdom, to end the Ga
za War and lay the groundwork for long-term stability in the region.
