GAIAE organises event on Zayed Humanitarian Day

ABU DHABI: Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, on Friday attended an event marking the Zayed Humanitarian Day.

It was organised by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE) in cooperation with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre.

The event was attended by a number of scholars and guests of UAE President; Dr. Hamdan Musallam Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC); Dr. Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Chairman of GAIAE; Mohammed Saeed Al Neyadi, Director-General of GAIAE; Dr. Youssef Al Obaidli, Director General of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, and several key figures in the country.

Muhammad Abd al-Rahman al-Duwaini, Undersecretary of Al-Azhar al-Sharif, who was among the scholars who were guests of the UAE President, delivered a speech entitled ‘Sheikh Zayed and Al-Azhar,’ in which he affirmed that the message of the late Sheikh Zayed is continuous and is being sustained by his successors.

He added that Sh
eikh Zayed’s legacy still demonstrates his wisdom, determination and contributions for the benefit of his nation both inside the UAE and abroad. Sheikh Zayed earned this towering position in hearts and minds due to his honourable global positions and contributions.

A number of scholars also delivered speeches highlighting Sheikh Zayed’s international legacy in all domains.

Safadi reiterates Jordan’s support for Palestinians at Cairo ministerial meeting

Amman: A second aid ship is preparing to set sail from the Larnaca port, Cyprus, to Gaza, Cypriot Foreign Ministry spokesperson Theodoros Gotsis told the official Cyprus Radio.

Gotsis said the second ship, Jennifer, is preparing to sail to the embattled Palestinian enclave “today or tomorrow from the port of Larnaca.”

He added, “Officials from the countries participating in the Cyprus initiative will meet next Thursday to discuss the next steps to increase the quantities and trips to Gaza.”

World Central Kitchen (WCK) reported that the ship would carry 240 tons of food to Gaza, adding that extreme weather conditions made it difficult to predict when it would sail to Gaza and when the first ship, “Open Arms,” would make its return trip.

National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, ne’ma reducing food waste and redistributing meals during Ramadan

ABU DHABI: The National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, ne’ma, has launched the Food Rescue Programme, as part of its Count Your ne’ma campaign, running throughout Ramadan.

Coinciding with Zayed Humanitarian Day, observed on the 19th of Ramadan each year to, commemorate the philanthropic legacy of UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the campaign stands to remind the community to be mindful of the blessing of food and encourage simple behavioural changes to reduce contribution to food loss and waste, in line with Emirati traditions and values.

The Food Rescue Programme, as part of the Count Your ne’ma campaign, aims to save and redistribute surplus food, and reduce food waste throughout Ramadan, while contributing to reducing emissions, in line with the UAE’s national goal of reducing food waste by half by 2030.

With the active participation of 300 volunteers, including Mariam Almheiri, Head of the Office of International Affairs, the Presidential Court, and Chairwoman of the ne
‘ma National Steering Committee, ne’ma succeeded in rescuing and distributing 156,227kg of surplus fresh local produce, benefiting more than 5,000 families in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah. More than 4,500 volunteering hours were spent packing and distributing the ne’ma family boxes.

Mariam Almheiri said, “The UAE attaches great importance to the issue of food loss and waste, and the ne’ma initiative aims to deliver on the UAE’s commitment to reduce food loss and waste by 50 per cent by the year 2030, in line with the SDGs and especially SDG 12.3. Count Your ne’ma campaign contributes to provoking our thinking of the critical issues related to food, enabling us to promote and encourage the positive behaviours that reflect strong Emirati values, such as mindfulness and also measured consumption, enabling everyone to contribute to achieving this important strategic goal.

Khuloud Al Nuwais, Chief Sustainability Officer, Emirates Foundation, and Secretary-General of the ne’ma Steering Committee, said, ‘ne’ma’s Food Rescue Programme is a key component of the Count Your ne’ma campaign. We are implementing this programme with a large number of partners from the private sector, and they span the entire food supply chain from farms, to distribution, packaging and transportation companies and start-ups. This underscores the importance of the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, across the government and private sector, to achieve the UAE’s goal of reducing food loss and waste by 50%
by 2030.’

During the Year of Sustainability, ne’ma is committed to promoting sustainable practices and aims to achieve zero food waste in landfills. It strives to significantly reduce food waste by rationalising consumption and redistributing surplus food to disadvantaged communities. ne’ma has also facilitated donations by promoting the culture of giving, in line with the spirit of the holy month.

Zayed Humanitarian Day elevates Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of compassion and benevolence: Bin Bayyah

ABU DHABI: Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, Chairman of the UAE Fatwa Council and Head of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, highlighted the enduring influence of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as a positive role model for generations, emphasising his commitment to serving the nation and aiding others.

Sheikh Zayed’s legacy of leadership and humanitarian efforts has established him as a global symbol of wisdom, compassion, and philanthropy, embodying the values of tolerance.

In a statement on the occasion of the Zayed Humanitarian Day, Bin Bayyah praised the ongoing efforts to uphold Sheikh Zayed’s values under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, noting the UAE’s unwavering support for global humanitarian causes regardless of the circumstances, which reflects the enduring legacy of Sheikh Zayed.

He mentioned that Sheikh Zayed’s values and positive attributes are currently being reinforced and maintained most effectively during the reign of President His Highness
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He also noted that the UAE extends its assistance worldwide, particularly during times of crises such as pandemics, earthquakes, floods, or wars, without any form of discrimination, thereby upholding the enduring principles and approach of the late Sheikh Zayed.

He highlighted that some of the UAE’s significant humanitarian projects include the “Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative” and the “Mothers’ Endowment Initiative, the Chivalrous Knight” aimed at assisting Palestinians by delivering essential aid such as water, food, and medicine.

The UAE has set up a desalination plant to supply clean drinking water to the Gaza community, opened a field hospital to offer medical care to the wounded, and welcomed numerous sick children, their families, and individuals with chronic illnesses for treatment in the nation’s hospitals.

China’s translation industry sees 7.1% growth in 2023

CHANGSHA: China had 623,260 translation enterprises by the end of 2023, marking a 7.1 percent increase from the previous year, according to China Daily.

The 2024 China Translation Industry Development Report, released by the Translators Association of China (TAC) during its annual conference in Changsha, Hunan province, revealed that the market value of these enterprises reached 68.64 billion yuan ($9.5 billion) in 2023, a 5.6 percent increase from 2022.

Beijing led the country with the highest number of translation enterprises, accounting for 27.5 percent of the total, followed by Shanghai (15.7 percent) and Guangdong province (10.1 percent).

The report also highlighted that China had 6.42 million translators by the end of 2023, a 6.8 percent increase from the previous year. However, the majority of these translators (5.47 million) were working part-time, which the report identified as a key factor hindering the development of translation enterprises.

Despite the growing demand for translation services,
the report noted that only about one-third of students majoring in translation and interpreting have pursued careers in the translation industry. Currently, 309 universities in China offer bachelor’s degrees in translation and interpreting, while 316 provide master’s degrees in the field.

DP World Foundation contributes AED10 million to Mothers’ Endowment campaign

DUBAI: DP World’s charity and humanitarian arm, the DP World Foundation, has joined a growing list of contributors to the Mothers’ Endowment campaign, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to honour mothers by establishing a AED 1 billion endowment fund that supports the education of millions around the world. DP World Foundation announced a contribution of AED 10 million to the campaign.

This contribution by DP World Foundation is part of a community wide response to the campaign by individuals, businesses and institutions, racing to support its aims of honouring mothers by enabling contributions to be made in their name, and highlighting their role in nurturing families and supporting the education of their children.

The campaign, launched under the umbrella of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, aims to support underprivileged individuals through education, which offers them a chance to improve their lives in a su
stainable way and prepares them for the job market. The campaign also promotes the values of honouring parents, kindness, compassion and solidarity.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World, expressed the profound significance of the Mothers’ Endowment campaign launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. ‘The campaign aligns with the vision of our wise leadership, fostering community engagement from individuals to institutions in charitable endeavours, thus ensuring their enduring impact on disadvantaged communities. The Mothers’ Endowment campaign continues to welcome donations and contributions to the endowment fund from institutions and individuals across six main channels including the campaign’s website (Mothersfund.ae), as well as a dedicated call center via the toll-free number (800 9999). Donations are also possible via bank transfers in the UAE dirham to the campaign bank account number with Emirates Islamic Bank (AE790340003708472909201). Donations via SMS are possible by sending the word ‘Mother’ to the following numbers (1034, 1035, 1036, 1038) for Etisalat by e and users. Other possible platforms for donating to the campaign are the DubaiNow app by clicking the ‘Donations’ tab, and Dubai’s community contributions platform Jood (Jood.ae).
