Seizure of the largest shipment of cocaine in Benghazi seaport.


Benghazi: Narcotics and Psychotropic Control Agency seized a shipment, which it described as ‘historic,’ carrying the secrets of an international crime in Benghazi seaport.

The agency said in a statement yesterday that its security personnel, in cooperation with military units seized the largest quantity of cocaine in the country’s history, through a qualitative operation in Benghazi seaport, whose value is more than 224 million Libyan dinars.

The agency explained that the seizure came after receiving a report on February 29, 2024 from the contact point of the Saudi General Directorate of Narcotics Control, stating that there was a suspicious shipment of bananas coming from the country of Ecuador, suspected of containing a raw cocaine.

The Agency said in its statement that upon receiving the information, the Investigation Office was tasked with forming a work team to collect information, and coordinate with the prosecution and the Customs Authority, noting that the investigations showed that the shipping p
rocess was carried out in accordance with internationally approved standards.

The agency continued that the next day, the team moved to the port to open the two containers, as it became clear that they were released after they were checked and passed a health examination, but its officers returned them and passed them again through the scanner.

The statement added that when the two containers were checked by ‘trace dogs,’ an amount at approximately (128) kilograms of raw cocaine (equivalent to (640) kilograms after dilution) was found hidden inside the floor of the two containers.

The Agency revealed that following preliminary investigations, the complicity of a member of the Customs Authority was revealed, and one of the suspects was arrested.

It added that the defendants and the drugs were transferred to the Customs Authority Directorate in Benghazi Seaport, highlighting that search and investigation operations are continuing regarding the rest of the network members.

Under Libyan mediation, Sudan agrees to indirect negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces.


Tripoli: Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq Ali, affiliated with the Sovereignty Council headed by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, confirmed today, Tuesday, that the Sudanese authorities have agreed to conduct indirect negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces, mediated by Libya and Turkey. .

The Russian “Sputnik” agency quoted Minister “Al-Sadiq” as saying, “We are still adhering to the necessity of finding a peaceful solution through negotiations, but at the same time, we stress that any solution must be based on the ‘Jeddah Platform,’ and we will implement it and then we can move forward.”

He added, ‘We are based on our conviction of the necessity of holding negotiations, which we agreed to immediately through the Libyan initiative, and it is expected that indirect negotiations will be held through the mediation of Libya and Turkey.’

The Sudanese Foreign Minister indicated that “the agreement, which was reached in May 2023, through the ‘Jeddah Platform,'” includes the withdrawal of the R
apid Support Forces from civilian homes and government institutions, and the evacuation of the capital, Khartoum, of all armed elements. However, the Rapid Support Forces did not adhere to the terms of this agreement,’ according to the Russian agency.

Last week, the Government of National Unity announced through its spokesman, Mohamed Hamouda, that Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dabaiba met with Al-Burhan and Hemedti in the capital, Tripoli, in order to communicate and listen directly, with the aim of Libya’s contribution to supporting a solution between the conflicting parties in the conflict. This stems from the historical relationship between the two peoples, as well as the bonds of brotherhood, and that the security of Sudan is the security of Libya and vice versa, according to the Arab World News Agency.

Ambassador Norland said in a tweet published by the US Embassy through its account on the X website: ‘Chargé d’Affaires Brent and I discussed with the Attorney General Al-Sour the American-Libyan cooperation in the field of the rule of law and criminal justice, which are key elements to ensure the stability of Libya in the long term and support its democratic future.”

Tripoli: The Chairman of the Council of the High National Elections Commission, ‘Imad Al-Sayeh,’ met today, Tuesday, with the Chargé d’Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Libya, ‘Ahmed Al-Shahiri,’ at the Council’s office.

The Commission’s media office stated that the meeting was attended by Council Member Rabab Halab, and reviewed a number of files related to electoral affairs and the importance of Arab and regional countries’ support for the upcoming elections, as they reflect on the peace and stability of the Arab region, and discussed ways to support proposals that guarantee their success in accordance with international standards. ?

During the meeting, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirmed his government’s support for the democratic path in Libya, praising the efforts made by the Commission and those in charge of it to provide ideal conditions for holding elections in accordance with the highest standards applicable in the world.

Tripoli: The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Al-Siddiq El-Kabeer, met yesterday at his office with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia to Libya, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Shehri.

The bank stated today that the meeting came as part of Al-Shehri’s resumption of his diplomatic work in Libya and preparations for the reopening of the headquarters of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Libya.

The meeting discussed the economic and financial affairs and general conditions of the region, in addition to the prospects for economic cooperation between the two countries.
