Union Association for Human Rights demands delivery of digital, climate justice at Future Summit

GENEVA: The Union Association for Human Rights (UAHR) stressed the importance of achieving digital and climate justice at the Future Summit, which is scheduled to be organised by the United Nations at the end of this year. The UAHR also emphasised the need for the summit to commit to the decisions and outcomes of the Climate Summit COP 28 and to build on them for international action to promote environmental rights around the world.

In two oral statements during the General Debate of Agenda Item 3 at the High-Level Segment of the 55th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council on Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development, held at the United Nations Office at Geneva, the UAHR called for strengthening international action to ensure the enjoyment of rights and freedoms, giving greater importance to environmental and climate issues, and working to strengthen international efforts to protect the climate.

In the first
statement, Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Kaabi, President of the UAHR, told the Human Rights Council that “the international community is deeply concerned about the future of human rights” and that human societies face many challenges that deepen the deprivation of enjoyment of basic rights and freedoms. She pointed out that despite the efforts made by the international community to strengthen the legislative and institutional framework for human rights, the suffering of civilians is increasing, and serious violations are constantly increasing.

Al Kaabi stressed the importance of investing the outcomes of the Future Summit in developing the work of human rights bodies and mechanisms, and the serious and urgent commitment to addressing the human rights situation in the world, especially in the most important areas for the future, such as climate justice and digital justice.

Al Kaabi called for the achievement of digital and climate justice at the Future Summit, and for the inclusion of environmental and climate issu
es on the summit’s agenda.

For her part, Mariam Al Ahmadi, Vice President of the UAHR, expressed in the second statement before the Human Rights Council her deep concern about the challenges and risks that the world is witnessing, which are causing the deepening of human suffering and deprivation of climate justice, despite international efforts to protect the environment and the safety of the planet.

She urged the international community to continue international cooperation to protect the climate, based on the outcomes and recommendations of the Climate Summit COP 28 and to adopt a humanitarian approach that contributes to addressing climate challenges or mitigating their severity and negative effects.
