DUBAI: Visiting Norwich City FC, Newcastle United FC, and Melbourne City FC were joined by local outfits Forza FC and Barca Academy Dubai in clinching top honours at the end of the 2024 Mina Cup that was held at the Jebel Ali Golf and Shooting Club and Resort.

Norwich City FC triumphed in the U-12s with a 2-0 win against local side Fursan Hispania, Newcastle United FC clinched the U-13s title with a 5-4 penalty shootout win against Chicago Fire, while Melbourne City FC will travel back to Australia with the U-14s trophy following their 2-1 win against Atlas FC.

Forza FC won the U-15s trophy following a hard-fought 2-1 win against Dubai City FC, and Barcelona Academy Dubai defeated Dubai City FC for the U-16s crown.

The winners in all age categories were crowned by English star Teddy Sheringham, a former England, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and West Ham United star striker, in his capacity as tournament ambassador.

Joining Sheringham at the presentation was Adel Al Bannai, Head of the Football Co
mpanies Department at Dubai Sports Council, Chris Brown, Founder of the Mina Cup, and Stuart McMurdo from Jebel Ali Golf and Shooting Club and Resort.

Sheringham, who turned 58 on 2nd April, had two separate stints with Hotspurs wedged in between his days at Manchester United, where he was part of the team that clinched the treble of the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1999.

Perhaps the 6.1-foot striker will be best remembered for scoring the equalizer and then providing the assist for Manchester United’s winning goal in the second-half injury period against Bayern Munich in that memorable 1999 UEFA Champions League final.

Meanwhile, the success of this annual event has persuaded the organising committee to expand the competition further and take it to England, Saudi Arabia, and the USA. The winners of these competitions will eventually converge in Dubai to compete in the grand finals.

The JA Sports Centre is a purpose-built training facility that includes four fully floodlit internat
ional-size football pitches.

The annual Mina Cup sees professional teams travel to Dubai from all corners of the globe. These teams compete alongside regionally based academies and clubs needed to qualify through a series of UAE qualifying rounds held in the last week of November 2023.

The vision behind the Mina Cup is to create a footballing legacy to champion the teams and players as part of their journey into professional football.

‘This concept focuses on eco-friendly practices for major sporting event ceremonies. It explores innovative ways to utilize sustainable materials for shows, sculptures, and design elements. This approach aims to create a visually stunning experience while minimizing environmental impact and harmful emissions. It aligns perfectly with the vision of our wise leadership and their commitment to sustainability, exemplified by hosting the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) held in Dubai last year. The recommendations from COP 28 further guide this approach towards a greener future for major sporting events.

‘The unity theme will celebrate the strong bonds of brotherho

articipating teams’ preparations, and providing insights into the efforts undertaken by various committees.

“We are keen on implementing the plan professionally to ensure its success, and we have seen great responses from all colleagues assigned to the task of preparing news about the participating teams and sharing them through an interactive electronic newsletter.

‘In addition, we are using various social media channels to broadcast news and promote the games. We have great confidence that things are progressing well, and we hope to achieve the best professional performance indicators in the coming period as the countdown to the start of the event begins,” he added.

Al Assam praised the smooth workflow in the media committee through various tasks assigned to field colleagues, the “desk” committee, the “audit” committee, the “social media” committee, and the photographers’ committee, resembling a miniature media institution. He added that this unique experience over the past period could represent a real
nucleus for establishing a strong base based on the high professional performance of a group of distinguished colleagues to undertake any future tasks in covering sports events hosted by the country.

He called for work during the coming period to follow up on news and preparations of the Gulf federations participating in the event, and to communicate with their officials to highlight the latest technical arrangements and lists of participating elements, based on a single and fundamental goal that equals the importance of this event, which consolidates common GCC visions in integrating roles and programmes to elevate the sports system in the GCC countries and achieve the competitive aspirations of Gulf youth.

He added that the team played a friendly match against Al Bataeh, and there will be another friendly match against the Sharjah Youth Team. Regarding the strongest competitors for the UAE bowling team for the title, the manager of the youth bowling team said: “We have very high confidence in the efficiency of our team members, who are characterized by intelligence and good behavior during competitions. In general, the levels are very close between the four teams, making it difficult to predict who will win the title.

‘However, based on preparations, our strongest competitor is the Qatar team, which hosts many tournaments throughout the year, followed by the Saudi Arabia team, and also the Bahrain team, which will have its say. It should be noted that the circumstances of the competition may lead to a different reality during the tournament, as bowling always witnesses c
onstant changes in levels before and during competitions.

‘I would like to point out that the tournament lost the Kuwait team, who did not register, and we hoped for its participation to increase the competitiveness.’

It is worth mentioning that the UAE youth bowling team includes four main players: Rashid Ali Al Nawabi, Salem Badr Abdullah, Mohammed Hassan Al Firdan, and Rashid Abdullah Al Marzouqi, in addition to two reserve players, and the names of the main players will be decided through the top four in the ranking of the team’s players in the Ramadan Dubai Championship, which concluded its competitions on Friday, April 5.

Expo Stars League/ Al Markhiya Back Among Victories by Beating Al Ahli

Doha: Al Markhiya tasted success as they bounced back from being a goal down to beat Al Ahli by a 4-1 margin in their Week 20 match of the 2023-2024 season Expo Stars League at the Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday.

The goals for Al Markhiya came from Mohammed Khaled Al Naimi (30th minute), Bashar Resan (43rd and 90th minutes), and Naoufal Bannis (83rd minute). Julian Draxler scored for Al Ahli in the 22nd minute.

It was a telling performance from Al Markhiya who are looking to wriggle out of a difficult position, now having raised their tally to 11 points with their third win of the league though they are still in 12th place. Al Ahli are in ninth spot with 20 points.

Al Markhiya made a fluent attacking start, with their star Yusupha Nije making a big strike in the 20th minute, but his kick went just wide to the left of goal.

Two minutes later, Al Ahli shocked their rivals as Draxler struck after exciting goal-mouth action. Draxler first moved in from the left to provide a pass to Al Dokali Al Sayed, who dro
ve from just outside the box and goalkeeper Loukay Ashour made a save with both hands, but the ball fell to Oumar Sekou who made a back flip and Al Markhiyas Naby Sarr rushed in to head the ball out, but Draxler was again waiting to put the ball back into the goal.

Al Markhiya did not take long to hit back and as Al Naimi made a spectacular header off a long free-kick to draw parity.

The contest became livelier as Al Markhiya matched their rivals and went up the lead just before the break, with Abdulrahman Moustafa moving down the right to pass the ball to Al Dokali who sent in a cross for a waiting Bashar Resan to make a rasping volley kick into the left corner of the net (2-1).

The second session was a long-drawn battle between the two sides as Al Ahli looked to make openings, but could not succeed.

Eventually, Al Markhiya dashed all Al Ahli hopes as Bashar cut through from the right to send the ball to Njie, who made a back pass for a waiting Naoufal Bannis to strike powerfully into the far left corner
(3-1).

Bashar Resan towards the end provided more icing on the cake as he hit from left top of the box to beat a diving goalkeeper for Al Marhkiyas fourth goal of the match.

Expo Stars League/ Qatar SC Beat Al Shamal 2-1 in Week 20

Doha: Qatar SC beat Al Shamal 2-1 in Week 20 of the 2023-2024 season Expo Stars League at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday.

All three goals of the match came through Qatar SCs players, with Bruno Tabata (23rd minute) and Yousef Mohammed (28th minute) scoring for coach Helio Sousas side, while Al Shamals goal came courtesy of an own goal by Khaled Mahmoudi in the 41st minute.

Qatar SC advanced to 19 points in the standings with the result, while Al Shamal remained on 21.

The match was evenly balanced with not much difference between the two sides until Qatar SCs Tabata opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after finishing off an impressive overlapping run by Yohan Boli, who made a good sprint with the ball from their own half of the field before perfectly setting up the Brazilian for the sublime finish.

The goal was, however, without incident, as Al Shamals Jassim Ali Al Hashemi, who was making a run to tackle Tabata, suffered a likely harmstring injury in the attempt and had to be stretchered out shortly a
fter the goal.

Six minutes later, an error in the midfield by Al Shamal resulted in the ball falling into Qatar SCs Raoul Sanda, who made a dashing run before firing a right-footed shot that was parried by goalkeeper Abdalla El Rady into the waiting legs of Ali, who only had to tap in to bag the second goal for Qatar SC.

With two goals down, Al Shamal started seeking a way back into the game with some brilliant attacking runs and their effort eventually paid off in the 41st minute when Mahmoudi mistakenly headed the ball into his own net in an attempt to clear the ball away to pull Al Shamal back into the game.

The scoreline remained the same as the team headed into the dugout for the break.

Al Shamal were the better side for most of the second half, but for all their superior ball possession, they could, however, not get the needed equliser as Qatar SC stood determined to run away with the maximum points.

Al Shamals closest attempt at securing the equaliser was in the 80th minute, when Yousef Belhandas
curling shot grazed the upright on its way out.

Without many other opportunities, Qatar SC cruised to a very important win, while Al Shamal were left to rue their luck.
