UN Chief Reiterates Importance of Ceasefire in Sudan

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday reiterated the importance of fully respecting the 72-hour ceasefire in Sudan.

In remarks today, Guterres affirmed his standing with the Sudanese people, and their hopes and demands for peace, the restoration of civilian rule and the democratic transition, extending thanks to the countries that assisted in safely transporting United Nations personnel and their dependents out of Sudan.

In a statement today UN Secretary-General’s Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said “The United Nations will continue to be with the people of Sudan. A United Nations hub in Port Sudan, led by Special Representative Volker Perthes, is enabling us to continue to work with our partners in support of peace and to alleviate humanitarian suffering.” Guterres had warned, earlier, of the continuation of clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, stressing that the solution to the conflict is not on the battlefield … and the ongoing conflict since the middle of this month may cause a long and large-scale war.

He referred to the desire of the Sudanese people for peace and the restoration of civil rule through the transition to democracy, reaffirming UN’s commitment to remain in Sudan and to provide support to the Sudanese people.
