UAE Floating Hospital in Al Arish starts receiving wounded PalestiniansCrown Prince sponsors ‘Crown Prince Foundation… a Path to Opportunities’

AL ARISH: The UAE Floating Hospital, anchored in the Port of Al-Arish, officially commenced operations today, providing vital medical assistance to the Palestinian people. The first patients, Gazans suffering from diverse injuries and fractures, were promptly received, marking the initiation of this critical healthcare initiative.

The initiative comes in alignment with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide all forms of support and assistance to the people of the Gaza Strip, as part of the ‘Gallant Knight 3’ humanitarian operation.

A 20-year-old Palestinian man underwent the first surgery today at the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds and shrapnel. The injuries caused a dislocated and fractured shoulder, damaging nerves in his arm and rendering his entire hand immobile. Doctors performed a swift surgical intervention to reposition the shoulder, and he will require a follow-up operation in the near future to address the nerve damage.

The Floating Hospit
al, established in cooperation with the Department of Health- Abu Dhabi and AD Ports Group, has a medical and administrative staff of 100 people from different specialties, including anaesthesia, general surgery, orthopedics, and emergency medicine, in addition to nurses and support staff.

The hospital has a capacity of 100 beds, operating rooms, intensive care, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, and medical cabinets.

Dr. Falah Al Mahmoud, Director of the Floating Hospital, said that the inauguration of the hospital will enhance the medical support system provided by the UAE to the people of the afflicted sector and alleviate the severity of the conditions they suffer from. The hospital is equipped with the best and latest equipment that contributes to providing all types of treatment and medical care according to the best international standards and protocols.

He added that the hospital, upon docking at the port of the Egyptian city of Al-Arish, began receiving the wounded and sick cases of the Palestinian
people and providing them with all forms of care, treatment, and medicines they need according to the highest levels of health care.

He pointed out that the Floating Hospital is equipped with a helipad and a marine boat, which enhance the response to emergency and difficult cases that require rapid medical intervention.

He noted that all the injured and sick cases that the hospital receives are immediately subjected to a comprehensive evaluation process that includes conducting all types of examinations and tests to deal with them according to the appropriate procedure, whether by surgical intervention or by applying the treatment programme that the patient’s condition requires.

For their part, a number of Palestinians who were received by the Floating Hospital expressed their thanks to the UAE and the wise leadership for this noble humanitarian initiative that provides comprehensive medical care to all the injured and sick cases.

They stressed that this humanitarian response from the UAE embodies its fir
m approach in standing by the Palestinian people and supporting them under all circumstances, appreciating the efforts of the medical and volunteer teams that have provided them with full support since the onset of the crisis.

Building on the success of the UAE integrated field hospital in Gaza, the Floating Hospital expands vital medical services to the Gaza Strip. Opened in December 2023, the existing integrated field hospital boasts 200 beds and a dedicated team of 83 volunteers from 21 nations, including 59 men and 24 women.

The UAE field hospital in Gaza performed more than 764 major and minor surgeries, and dealt with more than 6,620 cases during the past months that required medical intervention by the hospital team to provide the necessary treatment and care, starting from first aid, through performing the necessary surgeries to save lives, providing the necessary treatments and medicines, and ending with care and intensive care for those cases, in addition to consultations and other medical and the

Emirates Human Rights Association hosts symposium on occasion of World Day of Social Justice

DUBAI: In response to the United Nations’ call to mark the World Day of Social Justice, the Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA) held a symposium, titled ‘United for Humanity and Dignity’ to discuss various aspects of combating human trafficking and the rehabilitation of victims of the crime.

The event was organised in cooperation with the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT), the Ministry of Interior, and various national bodies and civil society organisations dedicated to fighting human trafficking and supporting victims in the country.

Celebrated on 20th February every year, the World Day of Social Justice highlights the significance of social justice for world peace, security and advancement.

The event showcased the UAE’s commitment and progress in eradicating human trafficking and highlighted the initiatives, programmes and projects implemented by the nation to address this issue, especially through the diligent efforts of the NCCHT. A leading player in the global campaign agains
t human trafficking, the UAE was the first country in the region to enact a comprehensive anti-human-trafficking law with Federal Law 51 in 2006. Comprised of representatives from various federal and local institutions, NCCHT has implemented a five-point strategy to fight the menace of trafficking, covering the prevention, prosecution, punishment, protection, and promotion of international cooperation.

The symposium extensively covered all forms of exploitation linked to human trafficking, including sexual exploitation, sale, begging, forced labour, and other exploitative practices. It highlighted national programmes aimed at combating human trafficking, and the training and qualification of law enforcement agencies and personnel engaged in these efforts. The event also spotlighted awareness programmes initiated by the NCCHT to educate the public about the crime, its risks, reporting methods, and mobilise community action, all of which reflect the nation’s dedication to eradicating human trafficking.

Sheikh
a Najla Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Emirates Human Rights Association, opened the event by affirming the association’s commitment to strengthening the UAE’s fight against human trafficking. The event emphasised the crucial role of civil society organisations in countering the crime and providing protection and care for victims. The Sawa’id Al Khair Association’s participation in the symposium underscored its significance.

Nasser Mohammed Nasser Al Khatri, First Deputy Prosecutor from the UAE’s Federal Public Prosecution, provided a comprehensive explanation of the crime of human trafficking, highlighting its three main elements: the act, the means, and the purpose, as well as legal penalties for trafficking.

Major Rashid Nasser Al Ali, an expert from the UAE Ministry of Interior, discussed strategies for monitoring trafficking-related crimes, identifying victims, and leveraging modern technology to protect victims.

Dr. Maryam Al Jaidi, a Case Manager at the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, spoke on
the national victim protection system, safeguarding victims’ rights, and the efforts of shelter centres to provide protection and care through various programmes and initiatives. She shared stories of victims that illustrated the UAE’s commitment to their care and reintegration.

The UAE maintains a network of shelters to protect and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking. Since human trafficking most often begins in the home countries of victims, the UAE has signed agreements with several countries to exchange best practices on the prevention of human trafficking and enhance assistance for victims of this crime. The UAE also participates in several regional and international efforts to counter human trafficking and regularly raises issues with the Arab Human Rights Commission Charter Committee.

The symposium concluded with several recommendations to bolster the state’s anti-trafficking efforts, such as enhancing civil society’s role in awareness programmes, creating a local database linked electronically
with relevant authorities, and establishing electronic communication channels for all stakeholders involved in combating human trafficking. Suggestions also included shortening litigation periods in trafficking cases, improving media content to raise awareness, promoting education in schools and enhancing training for personnel to fight trafficking effectively.

The Emirates Human Rights Association expressed its keenness to host the event on a regular basis, which will support efforts to fight human trafficking, promote a culture of human rights, and enhance community awareness on the issue.

The symposium concluded with Sheikha Najla Al Qasimi honouring experts and researchers from the UAE for their contributions.

A non-governmental, non-profit and public benefit association, the Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA) aims to foster an environment in which individuals are not only aware of their rights and duties towards society but are also encouraged to engage in an open and constructive dialogue with

This four-day event brings together ministers and senior officials to discuss international trade rules and regulations.

The gathering of 175 Member States, private sector leaders, NGOs, and civil society representatives will allow the global community to work together toward advancing a more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive trading system.

Ministerial Conferences are the highest decision-making body of the WTO and serve as crucial forums for member states to address trade challenges, refine trade rules, and set the agenda for global trade policy.

Building upon the advancements of MC12 held in Geneva in June 2022, where significant strides were made in areas such as fisheries subsidies, food security, and e-commerce, MC13 will focus on enhancing the access of developing countries and Least Develo
ped Countries (LDCs) to the global trading system, intellectual property, and WTO dispute resolution mechanisms.

The conference will also provide an opportunity to explore greater collaboration and partnership with non-governmental organisations, the private sector, and civil society to enhance the effectiveness of trade policies and programmes via a series of side events.

These include the TradeTech Global Forum, promoting the use of technology in global supply chains, and sessions on trade facilitation in partnership with Etihad Credit Insurance, trade finance with HSBC, SMEs with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), the WLP Logistics Challenges with DP World, Future of Cargo in collaboration with Emirates, and Sustainable Trade Africa.

WTO Chief urges cooperation at Ministerial Conference amid global challenges

ABU DHABI: The head of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Monday urged member countries to cooperate and deliver concrete results at the ongoing Ministerial Conference, highlighting the importance of trade in addressing global challenges.

Opening the WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in Abu Dhabi, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala acknowledged the complex global situation, marked by geopolitical tensions, rising inflation, and economic uncertainty. However, she emphasised the continued resilience of trade and the WTO’s role in promoting stability and tackling shared issues like poverty and climate change.

“Despite everything we have been through, global goods and services trade remain at or near record highs, with nearly ten percent of the global population still undernourished,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “International markets anchored in the rules-based global trading system have stayed broadly open, helping businesses, households, and economies adapt and adjust to one shock after the other.”

She
pointed to the success of the previous Ministerial Conference (MC12) in 2021, where members reached ten consensus agreements, and called for similar leadership and compromise at MC13. Key issues on the agenda include finalising the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement, which aims to curb the estimated $22 billion in annual harmful subsidies, addressing development concerns of least-developed countries, and making progress on WTO reform, including dispute settlement.

Okonjo-Iweala also highlighted the Secretariat’s efforts to support member countries through research, capacity building, and promoting inclusivity in trade. She expressed gratitude for a recent small budget increase for the Secretariat, which had faced funding constraints for over a decade.

She emphasised the need for leadership and compromise from all members, large and small, developed and developing. This leadership entails a willingness to flex national interests to secure broader gains and ultimately build a stronger WTO capable of delivering for
all. She reinforced this by quoting US Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau, highlighting the importance of international cooperation and shared purpose in achieving common goals, urging members to ‘get to work!’
